Title: help!!! my tranny man
Post by: magoo28 on April 07, 2006, 10:48:59 PM
I have an '88 cougar xr7 and I just switched out the 5.0 with one from a low mileage '87 20th anniversary that was wrecked.  I was going to use the transmission from that as well until.......I saw it was smaller!!!  one has a "56" stamped on top and the other had a "57" stamped on it.  the '87 was also smaller in appearance.  yet everywhere I look, all the info sites continue to say the cougars had the same 4spd AOD tranny in all models....... can somebody enlighten me?

The numbers on the bell housing mean nothing... I have '87 & '88 AOD's with 56 on them and a '86 with 32... The '90 Super Coupe AOD in the car now has 54 cast into it. AFIK it's just the numbers of the different molds used for castings.

i dont think it would be a c4 bc that is verry much smaller. you will be allrite with the lower milage one. do the linkages hook up rite. does the harness plug in if so put it in no more questions asked. use the low mileage converter also. dont start mismatching ..also just to be safe flush the cooler in the rad so just incase any band material from your old one doesnt get in and screw anything up.
