Title: no start condition now 1991 coug 5.0
Post by: impulsebuykevin on April 05, 2006, 06:24:32 PM
ok i just got this car, when it was warm a week ago (+15C) it would start but would crank for 3 secs and would stall in reverse if i didnt give it gas.

today its snowing and like -2c and it wont start. i changed the plugs, the old ones looked soaked in gas, i put in a coil that i knew worked. verified it working by giving myself a nice shock. i cleaned up the cap and rotor button with my dremel. i even put in a fresh battery but i drained it trying to get it to start. itall.

im going to maybe replace the injectors with some ones i have kicking around,  that is if the fuel pressure is good.

what would make a car not start when cold? air temp sensor?

When and where did you get shocked?  At the coil?  At the plug?  Was someone cranking the car when you got shocked?  Also since the car had wet plugs, pull the vac line off of the fpr and see if gas comes out.  may have to turn the key to prime the pump to get any to squirt out.

im just my lonesome self so to test the coil i tried looking at a spark plug thru the hood/cowl gap  but it was too far. so i took a long spark plug wire off my other car, took a new plug hooked it up held it in my hand and cranked the car through the window. definatly spark there.

could it be the maf? if so should i try starting it with the maf unplugged?  and do i have an intake temp sensor?

I assume they are MAF, first try to pull codes at autozone, if that dosent show anything, randomly replace sensors till it does. I hate EFI sometimes.

I would first guess cooliant tempeture sensor.

I don't get some people. EFI is sssssoooo easy to work on. Ford did all the hard work for you.

If you can't figure out how to do a simple KOEO/KOER test then give it up to someone else.

ok this is weird. car will crank all day,  but if i do the code scan with my reader, the car will start immediatly after im done this scan. turn car off, it will restart. and restart. and restart. let it sit for 10 mins and it wont start.

my mechanic said he wonders if reading the codes puts the advance timing back or somthing, he mentioned a crank sensor maybe...

oh i forgot, i swapped out some plug wires, put on a starter sol that i knew worked... and my mechanic watched for spark while i cranked. he said it turned over and some of the sparks looked half assed. is there a coil relay? wheres the fuel pressure relay?

im going to do the fuel filter and check fuel pressure next

was suggested that i ground off too much on the cap and rotor, and also suggested about the tfi. i will try different ones of each this weekend

Its definately not a problem with gas if it starts fine after a test. The test resets the computer. I am guess a problem with the computer or sensor. I would run the test first.
