Post by: Tbird232ci on March 22, 2006, 06:11:59 PM
I need to drill and tap a hole. I dont think i can find a 3/8-24 tap around here. Any stores to look at?

If Sears, Home Depot, Lowe's or your local HW store doesn't carry them...use McMaster-Carr.

Sometimes your best bet is to try a machining supply store; if there is one in your area.  Although, 3/8 being very common, should be found at homedepot (or whatever major chains you have in the USA)  The tap you are looking for may also be called a 3/8" UNF (unified fine thread), and not labeled 24 tpi.
If its a captured bolt, you may need two taps to thread the full length of the bore:  a plug tap and a bottoming tap.

I believe you also need a Q sized drill bit for that.  You may wanna check that in a machinest handbook, its just off the top of my head.    If not, you can probably go up to an 11/32" bit and loose a tiny bit of thread depth.
