Title: Would my car have some sort of rev/speed limiter
Post by: CougarSE on March 20, 2006, 09:53:23 PM
I blame this all on the fact that my speedo reads about 20 mph to fast.

Some times if I really give the cougar hell and take it to red line.  She will just fall flat, like the fuel got cut off.  But if I shift to the next gear and keep on hammerin it it will just keep going, like its not the speed.  But could it be the revs?  Its weird and I rarely take the cougar up to those high rpms but I was just wondering if maybe my car had some kinda limiter.

Your speed limiter is the 3.8

Valve float.

I've never experianced valve float.  But I thought it didn't just happen, I thought it to be more like a missfire.

Does the 3.8L have the same 6,250rpm fuel cut-off as our 5.0's?  Although I really can't see trying to scream a 3.8L to any more than 5500...lol.

 Now that I have the 245/50's and a trac-loc it wont. With the old 235/55's It would. Man If I still had 14's on the car I could roast them through third.

But now I've got too much realestate to turn back there.

valve float will feel like the motor was just put on idle, most likely what it is if I was a guessing man, which i am.

At 6250 rpm, the 3.8 would throw pistons into orbit.  ;)

I don't know how high I've actually had it, but I know its been into the red zone on that turbo coupe tach.  Wich is working well now for some reason.

is yours a 88? supercoupe stuff wount work would it? like heads, i know theirs also that v6 performance website that sells 6cyl stuff. maybe look their for some stiffer springs. it would be pretty sweet if you did the super coupe swap like spaz had done.

dont bother with valve springs. Replace them with a 5.0.

:iagree: Why waste the money on a 3.8L boat anchor, that could go into your 5.0L swap?  :shakehead :screwy:  If you have the motors in your garage, put it to use and throw it in that engine bay.

True, not like I need to be grenading my engine in my daily driver any way with high rpm's.
Title: Valve float
Post by: Fred on March 22, 2006, 12:10:50 AM
Valve float in my 83 T'Bird 3.8L felt just like a serious misfire and lack of acceleration.  After modifying the AOD to shift at 5400RPM's, I found the limits of the valve springs, (about 5100).  A call to ISKY Cams and a switch to them allowed me to rev to 6000+ RPM's, but the engine went flat beyond 4800 or so (stock 249degree cam).  My car is carb'd so a change to a 500CFM Holley made a big difference, but I doubt the fuel system of a FI car could handle those RPM's.  After a year of trying the impossible, I am currently installing a 5.0L H.O. engine.  Good luck to you.  By the way, I was told reving to 5000+ will kill the bottom end, but in my case no damage after 300 runs down the track!!  Fred

i used to get valve float in my 200 I6 Capri at about 4200 rpm (stupid log and worn valve springs) and it would feel like someone yanked the fuel line off my car, it would just go flat on its face. then when it came back down it would back fire like a mother cause of all that feul in the exaust.. was actaully kind of fun! hehehe

You know my car does pop when the revs come back down.

I don't think Ford has rev limiters, though they do have speed limiters. My 04 Crown Vic police cruiser limits out at about 130 MPH, feels like some is trying to cut the engine off. This is done by computer chip though. I know that NC Highway Patrol has the speed limiter removed.

They have rev limiters, just depends on which years and whatnot

all the fords up untill the 4.6L's had a rev limit of 6250
