how long would a stock 5.0 last with a turbo or supercharged with average boost?
what im mostly wondering is how strong the interior parts are stock and what all would need to be upgraded to have a turbo or SC
Well, for starters, you'll need a mass-air setup, if you don't already have one.
Probably need a good engine freshening as well, older, tired engines don't usually take too kindly to having air force-fed in to 'em.
Then, after mass air, you'll need bigger injectors, better exhaust, and more than likely, a stronger ignition. Probably some other stuff I can't remember, as tired as I am...
The best option would be to get a decent 5.0HO out of later stang, and the wiring, and ecm to it, as well, and freshen it up, and use that as base for a boosted engine, there are countless blower kits for the 5.0
Just make sure you do some research before ya buy one, they're not all alike.
But if you already have all this stuff, or the means to get it, by all means, do it all up, I know I would if could afford it. :D
no one knows how long a stock 5.0 will last under boost. Ill find out sometime in the next year or two
it's like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie(sp) pop.. depends on driving habbits but chances are if you got boost you gonna use it and it will wear a old Engine out quick
Depends on way too many things. Just like the old rumor about 5.0 blocks breaking at 500rwhp. There are guys breaking them at 300, and there are guys that have em running their balls of, in one piece, at 680rwhp. Then there are people who have broken them stock.
I do plan on turbo'ing a stnadard output with HO heads, intake and cam, im hoping it lasts a few months to a year at least, but if you knew how i drove my Turbo Coupe, youd wonder how anything i drive would last longer than a week.
The biggest issue really is the pistons. They are cast junk. Im hoping theyll handle 8-10psi for a while, untill i have the money to build a shortblock with forged pistons and shot peened rods.
I think 5-6 psi on a super would work fine. Its alot easier to get a bolt on kit for a super, and they will prolly last longer with less pluming. Turbo's are fun though.
No you don't.....

5-6 psi is still effectively adding 50% more displacement to the engine, and that is still a large amount of stress sometimes
probably last longer? *blinks* here we are running around with 20 year old turbos on our 20 year old cars, and youre talking about superchargers lasting longer?
, that's the first I've heard about that stuff at all!
That's neat as hell...
Good info there, someone should make it a sticky
A lot of the centrifugal supercharger kits out there offer a BOV with the larger kits (9 PSI or more). Even with a 6 PSI kit I would put on a BOV. I just wish my job would call me more often for overtime. That way I could order the Saleen kit for the Mustang already......
