i was wondering if it's possible to swap in a traction lok diff without having to completely tear off the rear end. because i found something that i think is the diff. idk im not good with this drivetrain as you guys can tell.http://www.performanceparts.ford.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=742
thats the link
Well, what do you mean by "tear off the rear end"? You will definatley take the axles out, press new bearings onto the new diff, remove the ring gear from old diff and onto new diff. Then set up your ring gear backlash, becuase a new diff case will move the ring gear.
actually...it sounds more like he is going to pay somebody to do it...unless he is into crossing his fingers and hoping for the best.
anyway....most of the sports from 87-88 had the 7.5 traction loc rear diffs....they would be a direct swap. wich would be way easier and probably cheeper than rebuilding one. ill have mine for sale pretty soon but im pretty sure its 273 not 308. i could be wrong though. ive never looked at the tag. its un abused and suprisingly tight.....
dood! this is like the third thread you've started about 7.5" 3.08 Rear Ends. to answer your question, yesh it is possible, but it is not a job for the novice. traction-lok alone will not give you any noticeable performance gains. you need to ditch the airplane gears.
look for a 87-88 TC rear. Preferably one from an automatic, they have 3.73 gears, 8.8, traction-lok and rear disc. By the time you spend all that money on a 7.5 traction-lok and for someone to install it, you could of purchased an whole rear end and installed it yourself.
lol i know this is like the third one. its just im so sick of my diff. and im not too good with my knowledge of my car. so i ask...sorry. but thanks.lol
Darkthunder has the easiest option, and you get the discs to go along with it.
yup. i just picked up a 3.73 geared tc rear complete for $150
Here's some good sites for you to check out. The first is your basic trak-lok install. The second is installing a Powertrax full locker. As you can see it's very similar.

For your application (especially if your keeping the 3.8) I would go with the basic Ford trak-lok. If you can find a rear-end like Darkthunder did I say go for it. Deffinetly a lot less headache involved.
