Title: stock bodykits?
Post by: grutinator on February 25, 2006, 12:09:53 AM
my cougar is a 1988 XR-7 and i've never seen one like mine in real life, and when i do a google search, i can only find four other 88's with body kits, but they are the same EXACT looking kit, does anyone know if in 1988 Mercury had a special package i dont know about that has a body kit, because its too weird of a coincidence that four out of four 88 cougars that have body kits have the same ones, and do u know if my car is any rarer or more valuable because of it? heres a pic of one of the ones that looks like mine.

Welcome to the board.
That's the GST Kit.  I've got it on one of my Cougars and other people here have it too.  It's been around since the 80s and was often added at the dealer to a few Cougars before they were even sold.  I wouldn't say the kit is rare but it is not very common either.  However, it doesn't seem like it is made anymore.

There are other kits too.
Here, this will give you some insight:

If you were to put your car up for sale next to another one without the kit, assuming all else equal, you could probably ask four hundred dollars or more because of the kit, provided it is intact.

thanks for the info, i really wasn't sure why mine looked so much different, but i really like that kit, it really gives it a very agressive, muscle car look. but the picture i posted isnt mine, i dont have a digital camera, but it looks alot like mine. mine has the mag wheels, and strips of chrome going down the sides. but again thanks

Are your mag wheels directionals?  Do you have any more pics now?  I see a Cougar in your avatar.  Is that your car?  Post some pics if you can.

Hi All, I am the proud owner of an 88' myself!  I have been looking all over for that GST kit but heard company is closed. Can someone please let me know where to get them now or if you know someone who knows someone who is selling a set.  Thanks! CHEESE
