Title: 87 cougar water temp sensor
Post by: mechanized on February 24, 2006, 09:00:44 PM
Hello all,

I have a question for you experts. The cougar I just finished is a 87 XR-7 non- HO 5.0 and has had the 89 GT 5.0 HO and mass air conversion done. It runs really good and is a totally different animal!!
 (even with 3.08s)
The question I have is the water temp sensor on the cougar is a two pr0ng connection that comes off of the drivers fender and the mustangs is a single pr0ng connection and is connected by the engine harness. I went ahead and put the cougar temp sensor on the engine, but it seems to be giving false readings like it is over heating even though the engine shows no sign of it Then it will do the reverse and show no heat on the digital gauge at all. I put a new sensor on and even checked for shorts but it continues to do this. What's the problem? Any ideas?

Do you have the full digital cluster in your dash?
Here's a pic of the full digital: http://www.coolcats.net/tech/general/digital.html (http://"http://www.coolcats.net/tech/general/digital.html")
If you do, I believe it takes it's own temp. sender, one that won't work for any other type.
Somewhere the was a site that had the differences of the 4 types of clusters that these cars had, but I can't find it right now...

the full digital cluster uses the same sensor as the computer just on the driver side of the intake. the mustang and buttstuffog use the single wore sensor
