Title: Exhaust options
Post by: Thunderstein on February 22, 2006, 05:00:33 PM
What options do I have as far as exhaust goes? I know the headers and midpipe will work from a foxbody mustang, but not sure what's out there in the way of catback.
87 Turbo Coupe 5.0

lots of people say mustang parts work fine. Just get the LX one. Other people say you have to lengthen it. YOu could always get the pipes from a mark7 and have extra length.

how much u want to spend? cheap would be stock stang shorties, cheap offroad h pipe, and a mustang catback lengthened by the shop (fox body), or one from stinger performance. all the catbacks iv had were lengthened mustang ones, they added a few inches the tailpipe right after the ler.
expensive, but sweet would be a nice set of ciramic coated or stainless LT's, good luck finding ones that fit (if you switched MC's their are some), and flow tubes, x or H, go'n to a stainless catback, again if its not for a tbird its going to have to be coustom or lengthened. ATR used to make sweet stainless exhaust, you could get the tailpipes from them, and stinger makes stuff for our cars too. just stay away from sn95 midpipes, their close, but still off.

thanks, I had ceramic LT's on my 03 GT, but for this project I'm probably gonna go with FRPP shorties. Could you post a link to where I could find stinger performance and ATR? I'm not familiar with either of those companies.

http://projecthp.ford23.com/stingerperformance.html Will also fit Thunderbird if tip is lengthened. ~Special Order Item~
http://www.atrperformance.com/ that is the ATR site, but it didnt work for me just now. as far as i know they still sell the turbo coupe catback, stainless 2 highflow 2.5" lers with tailpipes. you might have to call them tho.
keep in mind they are for turbo coupes, so all we can realy use is the catback stuff, they sell chrome tailpipes for us tho, so it does help thats all i can think of that actualy has any exhaust for us, but any exhaust shop will just weld a section of pipe to your catback to lengthen it for you, both of mine did.

i think atr is out of biz.
and cougarman used a magnaflow catback for stangs, fit great (not sure if he modded the flowtubes or not...) and sounds awesome. maybe he'll chime in to give the details.

i had hoped the site was just down, but if everyone else is saying it, they probley are out of biz.
also, i forgot to mension spintech makes side exit lers. that illiminates the whole tailpipe situation and spintech's lers sound pretty sweet.

Side exhaust doesn't work with subframe connectors...that's one of the big disadvantages of it.
Anyway...I had to lengthen the Fox tailpipes I have on my car by 11" for them to reach the bumper.

true, but that spintech setup is the subframes and lers designed to work with each other, thats why i liked em, unfortunatly the subframes would be short for us... iv often thought about continuing the subframe on our cars and connecting them to each other with maybe 2X2" x what ever length of box steel. then ditching the sf connectors.. meh, another idea for "someday"

my entire setup
$150 for the headers from summit
$200 for the work (moving the fuel filter and putting on the headers)
$300 for the rest of the work, (custom pipes from the headers to the lers, turndowns) and the two IMCO Turbos.
$650 for that kind of sound from an almost stock 5.0
Priceless.
