Title: Tail Light mod question
Post by: the_intimidator03 on February 12, 2006, 04:23:02 PM
Ive got a set of 85-86 smoked tail lights for cougar. i am doing the circle light mod found on cool cats. It says to gently pull off lense to avoid breaking it... How do u put the lense back on? push on or what?  and if anyone has done this any tips or suggestions? thanks

I believe there are little metal clips that are attached to the light fixture all the way around.  They come out to a "V" point and you bend them out to like a 45* angle with the inside of the fixture so that when you put the lens back on the litle points dig into the plastic if it tries to come off.  Some one out there will probably correct me on this, but that is what I gathered from my taillights.  I also have an 87 so it might be a whole other story.

That's how mine work but I lost one tail light because when I put it on it must have been loose.  Make sure it's tight and locked in.  I used a small amount of double sided tape the second time in addition to the clips.

There are the clips as well as a sealant that is a lot like windshield butyl.  It's a black-tarry substance.  Once it gets old it will stretch only a little and then snap, it's dried out.

Only if the teeth have been flattened to where they can't get a good "bite", or the curve has opened up and isn't squeezing the plastic tight enough to hold. The little teeth may also have cut grooves where they originally were, so there's less plastic to grab onto. Might have to install them a bit to one side to find some "fresh meat".

I did the circle mod to my 86 tailights as well. My lens didnt have any hooks tho. the lens just pulled off and slid back on- they havent fallen of. They seem to slide in hard and stay in place.
