Title: Unemployed......
Post by: Blck85TBirdV8 on February 09, 2006, 01:09:05 PM
I'm getting sick and tired of being unemployed. I have put like 50 something applications in since the first of the year. Not one of them has called me. Believe it or not I live in tourist country too. You would think there would be atleast one job would show intrest in me. I hate being jobless. McDonlads wont even hire me. Its ridiculus. I just had to rant.

i know exactly how you feel, i go through the same thing every time i loose a job. i guess its partly my fault for picking jobs that are eather , or temp basis only tho. did you try useing monsterjobs.com? what about retail, they always hire. and something i learnt was always talking directly with the manager, try to get them to rember you at least, or have a friend who's already in hook you up with a job.

Have you stopped to think about why they might not be interested in hiring you?

Me too.  I've been jobless since summer.  I guess I never should have quit, but it was miserable and I couldnt do that particular job with school.  I applied to about 6 places soon after that with no success and then just gave up for a while.  Now I'm praying to Jesus that Home Depot calls me back - a new one is opening on the 23rd, right between home and school.

Yea that has stayed in my mind all the time. I know 1 of many reasons they wont hire me.

I'm a high school drop out. I was in my senior yr in high school, and my parents decided to move here to TN. After the move, I didnt feel like startin a new school. But I am in the process of getting my G.E.D. Hopefully ill be ready to sign up for college this fall.

Thats legit, in my book.  I know why I'm not - I stopped putting my previous employment history down because my former boss is a hot-headed jerk and would give me bad references.  So my resume shows no former employment.  Three years of dyno operating, machine work, CNC balancing, engine building & online parts store management down the drain - absolutely nothing to show for it but my word.  Thanks, asshat - screw me over in the short run because youre holding a grudge over me wanting go to college instead of working for you 70 hrs a week with no benefits for the rest of my life.

Man, that felt good to get out.

you should just put a fellow worker down instead of your old asshat boss

It's a basically a two man (lifelong technicians) operation though, and in the 3 or so years I worked there, I probably saw 6 non-professionals (that I had to train) come and go - either from getting fired or just quitting from fatigue.  So theres no real way to do that.  By the way, after re-reading my post, I thought I would clarify that I was paid under the table, so theres no record of me working there anyway.  Hopefully that makes more sense.  I'm not complaining, I knew I should have been on the books but I took the risk anyway.

Sorry to hijack, Blck85TBirdV8, but since you were ranting I thought I'd rant a little bit too.

If I were you, I would put use reference anyway and I would also say that when you left that it wasn't on the best of terms.  If it had been an "on the books" kind of a job you an back up the fact that you worked there with record from your Social Security Office.

A prospective  employer SHOULD see that you were obviously good enough to keep around if you were there for 3 years.

Basically dude I think you need to be more assertive. Figure out witch place you really want to work. Then call them everyday until you get the job. It's worked for me before. I live a tourist area also. Be up front tell them you are going to call them everyday until they give you the job. I did notice that you live in TN. Have you tried to get a jod at an Oreilly parts store. They seem to always be hiring I work for them but not in the Stores anny more. Good discount on parts.

Are you remembering to call back to check your application status? This shows that you are really interested in working. And not just sitting around waiting.

If you sound like an idiot you will not get hired.
If you havn't shaved in two months you will not get hired.
If you are wearing a shirt that screams outloud some rock and roll band or some ugly saying you will not get hired.
If you come in and ask for an app and then ask for a pen to fill it out at the moment, you will most likely have your app tossed around and not looked at.
If you post your family members as referances and it says not too, your app WILL get thrown away!
If you swear while talking to the possible future boss he will not wan't you working for him.
If you ask a question about a question on the app, it will get thrown away.

Not to discurage you but I have managed at a few places now, and this is how I did it and everyone esle treated applications.

I call them all the time and they tell me is that position has been filled. Or theyll tell me that they call me back but they never do

I've called back many times with no results too, its very unsettling.  One store strung me on for weeks, telling me "sure, we'll get you started soon," but they eventually stopped returning my calls and then when I called I could never get a hold of them.  At Autozone & Advance I returned in person multiple times but with no success - they didnt even pretend they were interested.

Paul, thanks for the support.  My last application was to Home Depot and I'm hopeful about it, since its a new store.  But I'm going to re-evaluate my game plan for future apps.

Claude, so are you saying I should not wear my Iron Maiden t-shirt and Converses when I'm turning in applications?  :D

pssh this is how I got my last three jobs, but it helps alot when you have "in's" to really cool bosses and what not.

It could also be why my last three jobs were pizza, py computer tech, and sorting mail.

I lost 32 years when 3M closed our plant. I sent out fifty resumes a week. I'm a maintenance mechanic, work three miles from home.................life is good.  Two of my three kids are on their own, house and cars are paid for too. Prepare a quality resume and send shiznitloads of them out!
