When kids see the chrome CAI tubes under my hood, they always ask me if I'm hiding the turbo inside the inner fender. WTF?!

About 5 years ago I was at a car show in Virginia Beach. I met another local Cougar owner at a nice seafood restaurant, right by an inlet, with valet parking (a first for me). The valets loved the convertible and told me they'd take special care of it. I was a little nervous about that. But when I was leaving the restaurant, my key tag was marked 'Cougar GT', and I was parked right in front where nobody could ding it, between a BMW 735i and a Porsche 911. Needless to say...they were tipped well. ;)

I guess it just depends on the mental picture that people have about what a particular car is supposed to be. Some people just aren't good at shape recognition, or at differentiating one car from another. How many times has your T-Bird been called a Cougar? Or vice versa? How about being called a Mustang or Capri? Or Mark VII? Or even a Chevy?! It's amazing when you sit back at a car show and listen to the comments from passers-by about the cars, and what they "think" they are. Some are clueless, some are on the right track, some are dead-on. People are funny like that. ;)

I took the TC on an annual Thunderbird/Mustang cruise the year before last. Meet here, bs for a while, drive there, bs even longer, go home, kind of deal.

When we got to the cruise destination, the cars were divided on the big lawn. Birds to the right, Stangs to the left. Well, I had two ORGANIZERS in a row point left saying, "Mustangs over here". I just said "Thunderbird" to the first guy and went right, then another guy tries stopping me and sending me back to the Mustangs.

"You see a lot of Mustangs with a bird in the grille?" The guy laughed, apologized, and let me go. I can kind of let that slide with noobs and kids, but two guys who organize and run a Mustang club, a T-bird club, and their respective shows, should definitely know better.

Even worse, when I told my wife I was looking at a Thunderbird, she pleaded with me not to buy one of those 'greasemobiles'. She thought I was trying to buy a Firebird. And this was about a year after we sold our '91 Thunderbird, so she should have known better.

People seem to instantly recognize my car as a Thunderbird, but no one knows that they came with turbo 2.3's in em.

I get a mix between what you hear and cougarman. Half the people I talk to know what a TurboCoupe is, but they all think it's a turbo V6.

Well, if I get the "what year Thunderbird is that?" question one more time, I'm going to scream! No offense to tbird owners, but geeze, people need to at least notice the Cougar emblem on my car! lol

When I first bought my Cougar and showed it to my friends the first comment was is that thing super chargerd. He honestly though the XR7's all got super charged.

I had to set him staight that the first year for a Super Cougar was 89.

Oh, I've heard that way too many times.

There was a guy who came over and complemented me on it when I was getting gas once. He knew it was a Cougar and that alone made my day.

I get the same comment:

"That car is too big for a 4 cyl."

I also get a LOT of people who absolutely do not believe that it came stock with a 5-speed. Some of them come around after you I tell them that it is basically a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe in Mercury clothing but they still question the 5-speed part.

"All Cougars of that era were automatics, someone must have changed it before you bought it."

By that time I just give up, it's no use trying to convince them otherwise. :shakehead:

At Speedway stations here in ohio they come over the intercom and say "go ahead pump 7"  Well this particular girl was also saying the names of the cars.

"GO AHEAD PUMP 7 WITH THE WHITE JAGUAR!"

Man I laughed my ass off all the way to paying her.  She was really red.  But Hey she was cute!

That's classic. Try to show off and wind up making an a$$ of yourself. Get her number?

Reminds me of when I last took my car for emissions.
A girl was running the lane I was in and when I pulled up, some high school drop-out asked me if the car was rear or front drive. After I told him that it was rear, she got all pen 15y and said "I could have told you that." She then proceeded to point out all the cars in line that were rear, front or 4x4. After her little showing off, she put the tubes on my exhaust for the sniffers but she missed one. Apparently she didn't look enough to see that I have dual exhaust and the steam coming off the pipes was not enough for her to get a clue.

Hmmm, one of the chefs at my work was like whoa is that the crazy turbocharged 4-banger?

I think it throws a lot of people of that our cars don't actually have Manufacturer logos on them.  I know a lot of people have regocnized my car but they thought it was a Dodge Thunderbird.  I can imagine the same goes for the Cougars as well.  Oh well.  I love my car, nd no mater what anyone calls it I still feel like I drive a classy car.  The fact that it is pseudo-fast (hopefully I'll be changing that soon) is just a plus.

Everyone I meet at shows thinks that mine is a Turbo Coupe and that I put the 5.0 in there :screwy: . When I tell them that if you didn't get a Turbo Coupe you either had a V6 or a 5.0 then they ask me if its a turbo 5.0:brick: .

For some reason my Bird tends to attract hot girls when I'm driving it though:D  (I know it's not me it has to be the car).

You guys didn't understand what Haystack said?

He had a 5.0 sticker on one of his Cougars and when he was at the gas station once, a Camaro guy said something to him that Cougars didn't come with 5.0s. I love long sentences:D

Darren is right, that guy is an asshat. But then again so are most Camaro drivers.
