Title: Body Mods
Post by: lowcat on November 30, 2004, 06:43:30 PM
:welder:  :sawzall:
So what body mods has everyone done? I'm always looking for new ideas. So far I have removed the emblems on the trunk and side of the car, the molding between the wheelwells, the reflector in the tail lights, added sequential lights, turbo coupe hood, smoothed the gas cap, and shaved the antenna. I count paint jobs as a body mod so lets see what you got! As soon as I get batteries for my camera I will get some pics because :ttiwwp:

Shaved locks/emblems/antenna/keyless entry pad, sequentials, turbo coupe header panel, cowl hood, smoothed gas filler door, filled and smoothed engine bay. When it sees paint it will also have body color bodyside modlings and door handles, along witgh a custom two-tone scheme.

well i did this  my car mod pic (http://botchthecrab.com/archive/autobot/1988/optimus_prime_(powermaster).jpg)  took about a day or so, the tricky  part is the hydrolics and the mastering of quantum physics so i could efficantly handel the enerjon power source. its pretty trick when its transformed   :giggle:

but seriously... i shaved my emblems, used tc hood/header pannel and bumper cover. and removed my pin stripe.

So far: http://ferdbird.com/87sport

Shaved door handles, antenna, turbo coupe nose, Asturias Gray paint, wheels sand blasted and painted to match, painted mirrors, painted moldings. Sequential turn signals to be installed (in my nice heated garage... well worth the rent!)

Um, all I can say is wait till spring ;)

Interior is basically done too, but that's not really body so...

For all of you antenna shavers- how do you run an antenna after you shave the external one, and how is the reception?
Title: Re: Body Mods
Post by: lowcat on December 01, 2004, 09:26:03 AM
:giggle: What reception? I don't know about everyone else but I didn't do anything with the antenna but remove it and the wire. I could never find anything good on anyway. But don't some newer cars have part of the antenna on the windshield?

Uhhhh... put in the wrong headlights (Bosch H6054), epoxied the front signal lenses back on when they fell off, got the left side door molding hanging in a bag in the closet, used some touchup paint where the thrown egg chipped it.... that's about it.  :disappoin

As for the antenna, I never put one back in and yes, the answer is "what reception?"

BUT... the fenders are changing over the winter and an antenna will be put back, just not like the stock one... Expect a relatively different looking nose by spring, and I'll dare to say unlike anything you've seen yet.

Those who know my plans correct me if I'm wrong.

Just (spray) paint, paint, and more paint so far. Might try more than that once I've built up a little more confidence in my work.

No pics this time, I've already posted plenty of 'em.

You can buy hidden antennas that install in the headliner or on the windsheild .

I managed to mount Pilot PL-220 (clear) fog lamps in the stock air-dam openings in my '87 T-Bird (non- T/C, of course). It requires taking off the lower half of the nose and mounting the lights directly to the fiberglass bumper underneath the plastic nose. The trick was to come up with a spacer that let the lights hang low enough so that they sit exactly in the center of the air dam openings...this *will* make you laugh, but the perfect spacer turned out to be sections cut from the plastic handle of a kids' hockey stick (okay, it was all that was available, but it works wonderfully). The stick is just a hair (maybe 1/8" to 3/16") thicker than is needed, but since it's hollow, it will compress to the right thickness as you tighten the bolts down (so make sure your neighborhood hardware store is open so you can get the right length bolts). Lock washers are a must, but once the lights are in and wired (I used a stock panel and switch from a T/C) they make a base car look *so* much better.

I'm guessing he somehow used those round lights and mounted them to the existing headlight bucket, or the hole through which the headlight harness feeds, or at least a part of it.  How they're secured... no idea.

NOt good enough you know exactly what day the Jam is happening every year so you basically have a whole year to prepare. Wherever there's a will.. there's a way. If someone is REALLY set on going.. they'll go out of their way to make sure they can go.

Cougars 2 go,
At one time did you say you had a pair of the clear GTS headlamp covers (or any brand for that matter)? If so can you tell me where you got them?... I am in need of 2 pairs of clears in the months to come.

Thanks,
Scott

I've got a Turbo-Coupe front bumper cover to accomodate my 4 round fog lamps,a 2002 Bullitt Mustang billet gas lid, notched rear bumper to allow the dual exhaust tips to sit up IN the bumper, not just under it,a 2003 Thunderbird script on the trunk lid,Cougar side mirrors (the chrome ones),20th anniversary Cougar wheels....for now.I'm getting ready to do a 5 lug swap, and also change the drivetrain for a Lincoln Mark VII LSC drivetrain.I also had the car color changed from gun metal grey to Patriot Blue Pearl (a newer Chrysler color). You can see it on Cardomain. Also added a Locker rear with 3:45 gears and quadra-shaocks.

By the way,I wanted to add some kind of hood scoop, but I'm against stick on scoops, and non functional scoops,so I'm going to add a shaker scoop like on the Mach 1 from last year.

either way, its one thing to say "ill do what i can to try to make it out", but its another to say "its impossible, life sucks, jobs are hard, women wont let me, my mom has to hold my hand the whole way"

its the half full/half empty thing

thats what we usually do lowcat, i didnt make it last year, but everyone in MD met up and drove out in one crew

seems you're more offended than you assume I am. wtf is your prob? I just said it's impossible for some to drive halfway across the country just to see some cars. There ARE excuses, like having a job, school, and enough money to pay the bills and that's about it.

im not offended, it just irritates me when people just say "no it wont work", "no i cant", "that sucks", without even putting much thought into it, last year, i wasnt able to make it, as the year before, i had my reasons, but i tried most of everything i could to make it, its not like i said "no, i cant do it", i said "ill do everything i can to make it"

like i said, its the half full/half empty ordeal, you can try to make it and fail, or not try, same end result, but the effort was made

I was planning on going last year, but after seeing the last years pictures i didnt feel like my car would belong there. Lots of people told me that it dosent matter and thngs like that, so again I decided to go, then my car took a dump on me. And from here I was planning on about $400  just in gas. I even had the money's saved up, but I ended up spending money just to get my car back to the point it starts. This year I have two cats. and the new one has half the miliage at 115,000

I didn't intend to bring tension to this body mod thread about attending Cat Jam. Relying on just typed words without body language, tone, inflection, etc, sometimes things come across differently than intended.
I'm sure there will be plenty of folks at Cat Jam to see everyone's mods and discuss them on this board with those that are interested but couldn't make it. Also, there will most likely be a CD or two containing everyone's snapshots taken during Cat Jam that can be purchased by those who were unable to make it.

Did you see my 85 t-bird gray/black???  I think I had the worst looking car there and I went.  It looked really bad when I parked it at the car show at Chilis next to the 20,000-80,000 dollar show cars.  I think most people on these boards worked hard to get their cars where they are at and remember vividly what it took to get them there.  Besides you have to start somewhere.  My car was also on the borderline of making it there or not.

As far as making it to cat jam or not, it is never impossible, but coming from California would be very impractical for a 3 day show.  If it were me the ony way I would do it is if I worked it in with a 2-3 week vacation.  Or fly in and leave the bird at home.  My family reunion is the last Saturday of July every year so it will normally collide with Cat Jam's last full weekend of July.  That makes it a difficult choice for me which will keep me from going most of the time, otherwise I would prob. be there every year, as it is only an 9-10 hour drive for me.  I was really glad to have went to cat jam just to see the cars on the boards up close.
