Title: to throw away or not.....
Post by: Haystack on February 05, 2006, 12:25:41 PM
Basically, I have found a mint(basically brandnew looking everything, and no cracks on the dash!!!) 87 I think 5.0 tbird. No sport or anything, but the inside carpet looks like it has never been stepped on. Gold out side with maybe one door ding, sandle wood (I think thats what you call it) interior, perfect shape. only 74,000 miles. One of those granny drove to church on sunday cars.

The problem. THey want $2000, straight up in cash. And I have to get rid of a car in order to get it. Which would mean my 87 v-6 car. This other car is in in worse shape, and would make 3 5.0 86-87 fox bodies.

I am torn. I know I can get a loan, and this car is mint. Will I regret killing off my 87 v-6 cat? I will actually just let a freind "borrow" it for a while, just to get my dad off of my back about it, so I should be able to get it back.

Do it, its much easier to make a nice car when you start with a solid platform. And $2000 isnt too hard to pay off.

Sometimes even though you may love the car its gotta go,thats the conclusion I have come to with my 80 after years of working on the rust and mickey mouse fixes that had been done to it. I picked up the 82 for alot more than I paid for the 80 but its virtually rust free and straight so I'm going to part out my baby to fix up the other, hard decision but it'll be better this way.

Also, consider this.. the money you save by not having to do body work to get it into presentable shape, you can spend on engine modifications, or even a carputer ;)

Man If I could get a Strait body Cougar I would go for it.  Thing is I wouldn't do it for a Tbird, I'm a Cougar guy.  Don't know about you but you do have three Cougars.

Introduce the one down the street to me!!!!!

Seriously, if you can swing it and it won't hurt your wallet too much I say go for it!

Yeah, I say go for it. You will somewhat miss you're 3.8 cougar until you drive the 5.0 bird. It has the V-8 which is already better than the  '87, and if the car is in better condition too, bird wins hands down.

If I could do it all again I'd take the drivetrain out of my current Cougar and throw it in my old 87.  It was a 3.8 but was absolutely perfect inside and out. red metallic with red interior.

you will save that money pretty quick if you don't have to fix a ton of stuff.. and it is already a 5.0

Why not cut your V6 car in half, then get each half weighed, to see if there really is a 70/30 weight distribution? ;)

I have looked into it alot, and it would look like all my money for the next couple of months would go into the new tbird. I will have to fix my v-6 first, and let a freind drive it for a while. I am calling them today and see if they will take payments, or hold the car till I pay it off. I will let you all know.

I am sure I will not miss the v-6 car, but I get about 450 miles to a tank of gas on that car, mostly cause I don't step on it anywhere's near as much. But alot of good it has done me sitting the last couple of months in peices in my driveway.

Basically if I do this, all my money will go to this tbird, then carputer,
then the trip to cat jam.
google says:
Start address:   UT 84128
End address:   Youngstown, OH
Distance:   1,782 mi (about 1 day 5 hours)
That would be about 6 tanks of gas each way, saying I get 300 miles to a tank of gas. So around $1,000 in gas alone.

Only if it cost you close to $100 for a fill up each time for the round trip... You could just charge it on a credit card and let someone else worry about it once you pass away......

Yeah I am really over estimateing just in case. I guess I could but I dont want to. I have a decent amount of money and no bills so yeah. I decided against the tbird, problems with the title transfer.

I already had that happen a couple of times, including a vert mustang. I am done. Every car I try to buy in good shape has been stolen or someone elses.
