Title: 3.8 cougar being transplanted with 86 302 bronco
Post by: the_intimidator03 on February 04, 2006, 01:51:54 AM
ok i have an 84 mercury cougar with C5 transmission and 3.8. Well the 3.8 is coming out and carbed 302 is going in. My question is what parts will i need to do this swap? So far i know of. fox body 302 mounts, flexplate (find 83-86 tbird/cougar 302 with 3 speed auto) I have heard that ill need the 302 bellhousing for c5 cause one of the bolts to the engine is from the opposite side as the rest and the engine/trans bolts are different size. another thing i hear is ill need the v8 converter too? can anyone else verify this for me or fill me in on whats missin. THanks yall

are you going to use the trans that came with the 3.8? Then you will need the converter, flex plate and the bell housing. I think that should be it.
I am no expert and others here will know more. also, try searching the forums. I am sure someone else here has done that at least once.

ok this may be a stupid question but isnt the bell housing pattern the exact same on a 3.8 and a 5.0? I always thought they were considering my tbird has the AOD tranny off of a 5.0 hooked to a 3.8 right now and it works better then the tranny off of the 3.8. What I would have more of a worry on is if youre using the 5.0 distributor with the same plug on it as the 3.8 isnt the computer what controls the ignition system on that? if it is will that mess with the engine?

the electronic themself's are all takin care of its going back to Duraspark II ignition systems.  Funny thing is when i called parts house to get flexplate they said.... what engine and i told em n for what car it didnt matter which automatic... C5 or aod it didnt matter. which means they are same part numbers i guess and are interchangable.
