I may be jumping the gun a little bit here, but my engine build up will be stalled for a little while so I'm ruminating about the rest of the project.
Has anyone here rebuilt their own T5? If so, what kit did you use? The rebuild kits I see seem to vary in price from $100 to $250 with what looks like the same parts. Does anyone know the difference between a $100 eBay special and a $250 one from Mustangs Unlimited?
I'm debating what to actually do with my T5. I know that it grinds 2nd under hard shifting. I could live with that, as I'm just trying to get the project rolling. But my other options are to rebuild it myself (which I could probaly do), or to have a friend of mine rebuild it for $200 plus the cost of parts (a seasoned Ford Tech who use to specialize in manual trans and rear end - actually the guy I bought the Fairmont from).
So what do you think? Any tips for rebuilding a WC T5?

No one has rebuilt a T5 themselves?
There are some tricky spots when rebuilding a manual tranny. I wouldn't personally try it on my own unless I had supervision by someone experienced, but that's just me. If your friend could do it for $200.00 that sounds like a bargain to me. All the good kits that I have seen go for $250.00 so if there is one $150.00 cheaper I would be scared.
I did mine with one of the Hanlon kits. Really not too bad, but you need a press and snap-ring pliers.
I need to rebuild another, and I'll get another Hanlon kit.
If you don't have the proper tools, then buy the Hanlon kit and have your buddy do it.
can a non world class tranny be converted over to a world class tranny with a kit of some sort?
Awesome, I'm browsing the Hanlon website now. I'll probably have to call them Monday as their website isnt very informative. They offer two kits for the T5 but there's no parts description for either - just "master" and "refresh." Prices seem reasonable too, considering they get your approval, Chuck ;)
Well, IIRC the "master" kits include bearings and the blocking rings and such. For any of their rebuild kits, replacement gears and such are extra. That's where you get into the higher costs. I think they also have a video that shows disassembly/reassembly as well.
Shame- To convert a non-WC to a WC you're pretty much going to need everything out of a WC trans. If you have one that you are planning on using, just rebuild/refresh it and keep it full of good lube. I've got one sitting here I'm going to rebuild for use in a daily driver.

ive got a non world class sitting around that i salvaged. figured it would be better than letting it go. the shift throw on it feels longer than my rangers...lol other than that its good tranny.

Hey not to take this thread over but Chuck, since we live in the same state I figure I'd ask. Do you know of any good salvage yards to find T-5's? I live near Bloomington and can't seem to find any...well I've found like one but the price is sky high (the place is known for being high priced). Around here there are not too many Fox bodies in the yards mostly trucks and fwd cars. I'd like to find a good wrecked 5.0 'stang and pull all the trans related parts off it but thats like finding gold in a pile of manure sometimes!
well, it came out of an 89 mustang but it was originally a 4 cyl car. i have no ideah what year the tranny is, or what it originally came out of. im assumeing like an 85ish V8 mustang. its deffinetly not geared like a 4 cyl tranny. the throw is much longer than say a turbo coupes or a WC (i assume, its been awhile since ive driven a WC mustang).
