Ok, first, this is non-car question. I have an old Suzuki ATV quadrunner, and some day this ATV started to get blue clouds from the tailpipe. Yes, the most probably is that the piston rings need replacement. Since this ATV is too old, i want to do that reparation. if the engine block dont need machining, Can i try to do that job ? .In Theory, this work will be hard ? (forget all the specific things ; only the basics) i guess that if i will pay 500 USD the engine will work again, but if i buy the rings and put in the engine, will cost me less.....

I don't know much about ATV's but I am assuming this is a four stroke engine.  Is it air cooled or liquid cooled.  If air cooled it requires a much thicker oil (like 50W).  Running automotive oil (like 5W30) will cause oil consumption because air cooled engines run much hotter. 

If the piston rings are the culprits, they should be fairly simple to change (compared to a car engine).  You will need piston a piston ring compressor basic wrenches and sockets, Impact tools to remove the drive pulleys, and probably some other things i cannot think of. 

Assuming againt that it is four stroke it could be valve seals too.

I know nothing about ATV but I remember my cousin had a similar problem with his motocross couple of year ago... I'd say you are burning coolant and you will need a new gasket... thats why the blue smoke....

Burning oil should be white smoke... (i guess)

Its a four stroke, air cooled, 246cc. Yes, i need to quit the valves, but i guess that they need (when ill go to reinstall) a specifical amount of torque. May i have a Torquimetro !?(i dont know how to describe the tool what indicates the torque of the bolt...). Ill gonna try, no matter....

Those engines are very simple in design. I would try to get a manual from Ebay or the dealer before teardown. Personally I would leave the bottom end intact, and just pull the head and cylinder off. Throw some new rings on the piston and hone the cylinder with a cheap cylinder hone for a drill. (if there isn't any cylinder wall damage). You may also consider a quick valve job while your in there.

Sly1990:  you got it backwards.  Blue smoke - oil    white = coolant. 

black = rich condition.

Valve job ? This will increase a bit the performance , right ? how i do it ? its sounds very interesting....

i just did a king quad a couple of  months ago with the blue smoke syndrum and just did the rings.big mistake do the piston also you won't be sorry it's alittle more but well worth it.i had to rebuild the whole engine last week with the .02 over cause of scoring which wasn't there befor due to ring slap(loose fit in ring groove)
