Title: More progress on Cowl Hood

Well, here are some pics of the cowl hood fully welded.  In the pics I have not added any body filler yet to show just how little there will be.  This hood is definitly the best I have done yet.  Let me know what you think.:hick:

Looks really good.  I like how the lines are a compromise between the hood lines and the center axis line.  I also like the height.

It looks good for being all steel.  I plan on building a lightweight tubular steel frame for mine, cutting the part of the hood out that I want to use for the cowl and just lay fiberglass on the sides...i also plan to have it tranistion into the header panel...just need to pick up one more header panel and I should be ready to go...as soon as the weather breaks.  I'll probably start in on it in March.  I also plan on cutting the bracing out from under the cowl(except in the very front/rear).  I'm getting some good ideas from you guys. 

BTW, that cougar looks like it has the potential to be really mean.  Already has the lines, just needs to be cleaned up.

Thanks guys.  Sick88tbird, judging by what you have just typed, I'm going to bet this is your first attempt at building a cowl right?  TRUST ME.  BAAAAAAAAAAAAADDD Idea with the steel/fiberglass thing, and removing the bracing from underneath.  Wont work.  Oh yeah, read the plate in the first set of pics.  It's death sentence has begun today. :(  And yes Thunder Chicken.  It was Alex's Cat.  Costed me more then I was willing to pay, but at least I might be able to get the '85 back on the road by summer thanks to Alex.

  Didn't the 'glass bond to the metal? Was planning to do some 'glass work creations myself.

Nope.  just ask anyone who seen my first attempt with fiberglass/metal, on baXo's cat at the second CJ.  Looked great when he left here, but by the time he got to Ohio it had already started to come apart.  Now it is welded all the way for me, with a slight skim on bodyfiller.  (the way it should be.)

yeah RJ is right.. firbreglass on metal is bad I actually watched it starting to separate as I was driving.

P.S. It's good to see the cat actually getting worked on ;)

Well I have a great deal of experience with fiberglass...I don't know if you were using fiberglass filler, but I lay fiberglass cloth and have NEVER had a problem.  I've never had a problem with adhesion or cracking.  Many people make the mistake of not properly prepping the steel surfaces and/or not laying the fiberglass cloth thick enough....on a hood, you can't lay 2 or 3 layers and expect it to be good.  You need at least 5-6 layers.

It's not too late to trade back.  The only thing I have taken off it is the struts.  I plan to dig into it later to day though.

Hey did you get that other GFX kit?

I might just end up doing steel sides instead of 'glass...simply for the strength factor.  We'll see what happens....I'll make sure and let you guys know when I get started in on it.
