How about a change of cars? Maybe a raffle to see who's cars should get picked to make it fair? Eric is very good at the photoshop from what I can see. Well what do you think?

Heck I dont even have anything to donate as for my own. I have a TBird but it is not worth putting up there. I do however have TONS of 84-88 TBird pics that I collected over some time. Some may be the memebers here or on other boards, some could be ones you never seen before.

I planned on making about 10 different header pics, then putting them on a random cycle. Let me confirm that we can implement that, then I'll post back here.

Heh, you don't need Photoshop to make a sig. You could use MS Paint and Word :giggle:
Of course I'm not laughing too hard because I've done it.

That would be awesome to have a cycling header with members' cars.

Nothing personal to whomever owns the cars currently in the header, but I hardly ever pay attention to 'em unless someone mentions them. (like right now)

However, I would also support the rotating-header thing. Don't have any cars I'd consider offering for pics for it, (at least until I take the '86 off the road completely for a year or so.. until then, the cleanest vehicle here is my Dodge truck) :p but it would be nice for the people who have header-worthy pics to get to see them up there.

I want a sig of my three cars. I was gonna do something what i want to my HS senior pics. I hate when i do stuff in paint cuz it always ends up halfassed because i dont wanna spend time on it with such limited abilities. Lately Ive been trying to take pictures of the Black 86 and combine another pic to show the projected final outcome.

If it is in nice condition then yeah or if it isn't riced out. Not saying this is anyones car here just generally speaking.

James

The term "rice" could be subjective though, what one considers "rice" another could consider nice.

Also, my opinion is that not everybody should have pictures in the header, as bird351 stated that he doesn't pay attention to the header. why? because it gets old and it loses its spooge.

Sure now everyone has a curiousity as to why isn't their car in the header, but to be honest, i've grown quite fond of the 2 cars in the header now. And the fact that it's the same, it creates the effect that I'm home. Whenever I log in and see the header, I know i'm home.

Yeah, I'd like to see a change. The best part about a changing header would be not just for us who are members of the board but the visitors.
It would give visitors a glance at a sample of our cars. They can see what some of us do with them just by looking at the top of the board.
They will also see that Cobra wheels are not the only wheels that fit the T-Bird/Cougar, and that there are a variety of models. Not just an 87-88 TC and an 87 XR-7.
Who knows if someone has one of these cars that isn't in perfect condition unlike the ones currently in the header, they may feel more at home to see a members primered or multicolored car up there meaning they may feel better about joining and partiting.

Just make a banner that has the progresion of the bird and cougar from the 81? to 88. Then have the title and links in the middle. This would give visitors an idea of what a fox bird or cougar is.

They would find that out by reading the actual content. You don't need to put a history lesson in a top banner. Just something that looks good and adds to the site's presence.

I think I can speak for EVERYONE on this board that is if you own a Cougar or a Thunderbird YOU ARE NOT RICH! Sorry these are rich peoples cars even when the were on the showroom floor!

How about Eric's Cougar since it is one of a kind and Hawk's TBird since it is one of a kind? The blue and white should get attention. It gets beat looking at the same header all the time. It's not like we get alot of recognition owning these cars. We are the ones that are keeping them alive!

Agree 100%.  They would learn what they need by the content of this board as well as exploring critical sites such as Eric's and Carmen's as well as other users personal sites. I'm not saying to put everyones car up there or put an example of every specific model but a little variety wouldn't hurt.

OK, I have a game plan for what we can do that should satisfy everyone here, plus make it attractive for noobs. I think having one Cougar and one T-Bird on each photo should be a prerequisite (gotta keep things fair, right?). I mean...this is the Fox T-Bird/Cougar Forums. ;)

Also, we will use cars from the general pull of this board, and will put the owner's screen name, year and model on that part of the photo. That way, if a noob has a question about a particular car, there's the screen name for an IM. And that should head off any redundant questions about "Whose car is that up at the top?"

So...I suppose the only thing left to figure out is...whose cars will get chosen to represent...and that's not my battle. I'm just the artist. Y'all figure that part out, post the pix here, and I'll make the banners.

Great idea Eric, but is there going to be enough room up there for all that info? Larger header?

Oh, and if you want us to post pics here, what are the size limitations etc.?

Post by: EricCoolCats on December 28, 2005, 05:38:15 PM
We can make the header as large as we want, but I am going to keep it to just under 800 pixels wide, which will accommodate smaller screens (like a 12" laptop). So it will grow a bit wider, and possibly a little taller, but otherwise it won't be a huge change from now.

For the photos...what's in your signature is just fine. Let's say no smaller than 250 pixels wide. I have plenty of ways to work magic in Photoshop. ;)

Which angles and types of shots would be best suited for that header?  Front and rear quarter shots of one car like what's up there now?

Here are some that can be photoshopped to fit:

We should probably start posting ideas on the process flow to get this moving along.

I'm thinking one banner (two cars) per month.  One month is probably short enough to keep the banner "fresh" but long enough to prevent constant involvement from Eric or Baxo.  I don't know how long those banners would take to create though.

I think the first week of the month would be used for posting pictures in a new thread entitled something like "Banner picture submissions, February 2006."  The second week would be used for voting.  The last two weeks would be used for Eric, Baxo or whoever (I would love to help but does anyone know how I can get a cheap and LEGAL version of Photoshop?) to create the next month's banner and then upload it on the 1st.

Now, to prevent the thread from becoming overloaded with huge pictures, I suggest everyone use a hosting site and post thumbnails (there are free ones out there for those of us that are too cheap to spend the money) that link to a larger version from which edits and size reductions can easily be made.  OR, post small pictures at the minimum given by Eric or no larger than like 500 or 600 pixels wide.

Then, label each picture with a number.  If your post is third in that thread, and the first two posts have eight pictures, you would start labeling yours with #9.  Once you submit, check your post to be sure your picture sequence continues the series in case someone posted just before you submitted.

Photoshop folks: Does it matter how much clutter is around the car and in the background in the picture?

Now, for the voting.  Is the max poll number set by Vbulletin or by our admins?  If we have the ability to post a poll with no limit on the number of options, can we set that up and restrict each user to two votes?  Or would it be easier for everyone to email their two choices to someone?  I can volunteer here too or we can rotate the vote counter to someone who doesn't have any submissions for that month and post who receives the votes for that month in the thread with the submissions (be sure your email links work).

Here is an example of the label method I mentioned:

1:
(http://img437.imageshack.us/img437/3407/beforeatnightstandardquality7z.th.jpg) (http://img437.imageshack.us/my.php?image=beforeatnightstandardquality7z.jpg)

2:
(http://img437.imageshack.us/img437/2748/cougars2go6yv.th.jpg) (http://img437.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cougars2go6yv.jpg)

3:
(http://img437.imageshack.us/img437/8824/fog4ek.th.jpg) (http://img437.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fog4ek.jpg)

4:
(http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/6391/p10110284zs.th.jpg) (http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p10110284zs.jpg)

...then the next post would pick up with #5.

Ok, so would that approach work?
Title: Fox T-Bird/Cougar Forums header
Post by: EricCoolCats on January 09, 2006, 11:14:45 AM
Wow...that's way too much effort Karl. ;)

The way it would work is, once the code is in place, an image is pulled from a directory that contains ALL the new header images. In other words, every time you view a page the header will change randomly. As we get more headers made we just throw them in that directory. Nice, simple, efficient, and truly random. This isn't meant to be a popularity contest or a way to stroke egos...just a cool way to show a few of the members' cars here, nothing more. Changing it manually would defeat the purpose of the random code, and since I'm the keeper of the master file, I can say for certainty that would be something I'd simply forget to do every month. Much better to do them all at once, put them in a directory, and let the code take it from there.

So far the images everyone have posted are good for clarity and size. I edit the pix as needed so it doesn't really matter as far as backgrounds. If you see how they are at the top banner now, it didn't take much to tweak the photo to fit, sharpen it up, and get the right angle set. Honestly it's not that much work for me to do in one sitting. Maybe an hour or two to get everything done. I just need all the photos first.

That being said...we need some more 4-eye cars (Cats and Birds). I don't want to put mine up there unless absolutely necessary. So everyone that has a PHOTO of a 4-eye (even if you don't have the car anymore!), please post them. I have enough photos right now to do 5 new headers. I'd like to get maybe 10-12 total.

Oh yeah, almost forgot...Billyf17... dude, I am just in love with your Cat.

Karl, I was just explaining how the randomizer script works. Baxo actually wrote it for my site but we can adapt it and port it over to this board since it uses the same type of coding. I was just explaining the process of how it works, nothing else implied. :)

I have all of the submitted photos in this thread, and since they all look good to me, I don't see a reason why they shouldn't be on the banners.

Karl, I was just explaining how the randomizer script works. Baxo actually wrote it for my site but we can adapt it and port it over to this board since it uses the same type of coding. I was just explaining the process of how it works, nothing else implied. :)

I have all of the submitted photos in this thread, and since they all look good to me, I don't see a reason why they shouldn't be on the banners.

so does this mean that everyone who posted pics in this thread gets to be on the banners?

Looks really good but the usernames don't agree with my eyeballs.
Is there a way to make the header space slightly taller and have the extra space below match the page background and use that space for the names?
Also, I pulled most of my pictures out of the running and only left those that if selected, I would want on the header.

Karl, I'm trying to keep the height small so that it won't take long to load on dialup. The working dimensions are very tight...I can't promise that in every situation, I can do what you ask. But I'll see if it can be tweaked a little.

OK, everyone seems to be happy with the overall design. I'm going to keep rolling with the layouts and hopefully within a week or so, we'll get this implemented.
