The one thing I hate about my Birds over Stangs is that blasted Emergency Foot Brake! What a travesty. Even more so on a 5-speed. How sporty is that? It's usefulness outside of 'parking' is pretty nil indeed... IMO. =/ I have been contemplating mutalating my interior with a Stang center console to get my beloved hand brake. My question is has anyone else done this? If not I suppose I should document my trials and errors throughly, but any tips and heads up would be greatly appreciated.
cool. i was thinking of that once. if you got later mustang power seats or made brackets you could move the controls too the base or side of the seats. grafting a stang console should be easy enough although some work. the hand brake basically just bolts right too the hump i think. all you would have too move is the pwr mirror switch (maybe to the dash. sports dont have the firm ride switch so mine would go there) and the pwr windo switch. if they werent together you could put those in the doors although there would be more wiring i imagine. i think it would be cool. i deffinetly prefer the hand brake over the foot brake. its a pain in the jock if you are a little taller, or bigger. further more, the thing that realy gets me is if its raining out or your feet are wet or muddy and you had pushed the brake down you get sprayed by in the face when you release it.
i think your best bet is installing a mn12 tbird consol some how grafting it up to the dash. i say mn12 because its longer and has the big ebrake handle. possibly a sn95 mustang one. another option is putting in a fox stang dash and console but they are to short. probley about 10 different ways you can do it, but its alot to do. iv been thinking about it to, but its alot of work just to relocate something i already have so it got pushed back on the list...
I found a guy willing to sell me the center console from an 86 Stang with the e-brake included. My question is, what is a decent price for this? I have no clue when it comes to interior parts. =/
i dunno...20 bucks?
Shame302, I know a coupla weeks ago, you inquired about the condition of the TC emrg. brake brackets...
Well, they're fairly rusted, calipers frozen, blah blah...
I was hoping it was all good, I woulda parted with the park brake stuff...oh well.
Sucks about the calipers too, wonder if the parts store will still take em for a core? Guess I'll find out soon.
thats alright man...i appreciate it either way...i dont need the callipers themselvs. i just need the ebrake cables and (more importantly the brackets) between the pedal and the rear diff. they are different than the sports and wont work with the cobra rear brakes. i dont mind buying new ebrake cables from the store...you can still buy those...
You are right, that foot brake sucks. I think it would be tuff to get the other consoles to look right after hacking them up though. I really want the hand brake as well and fully intend to do so some day. It's not high on my priority list right now though. My idea to do this with a 5 speed setup was to make the shifter boot free-standing with somekind of aftermarket boot/plate and bolt in an aftermarket handbrake assembly directly to the floor hump. Then relocate the console switches either to the door, roof, or center dash. Of coarse you would be loosing any storage at the console with this idea.
any news on this? i think alot of people would like to have something like this one day, if the newer tbirds can do it im sure we can to lol.
Here's something that might peak your interest. I found this last month while doing a little research on intalling an ebrake handle of my own. Lokar makes universal floor mounted ebrake handles. They also sell vehicle specific cables to go with them. And for some reason, they felt that the 87-88 Tbird was worthy of inclusion on their short list. Is this for real and do they work? I don't know. I don't have the funds right now to try it. Maybe somebody else does and would like to let me know if it works. ;)

Instead of trying to make the center position of your car work, what about mounting it on the outboard side of your driver seat like the Jaguar XJS two-door series convertibles and coupes?
That setup will take the hassle out of cable length and location. But the console still needs to be addressed. Thanks for the link. :)
If anyone has any 79-86; 87-93; 94-98 Stang center console pics that would help lots. I am browsing cardomain, but interior pics seem to be few and far between.
EDIT: hoo-rah for ebay!
oooo, that could be mounted in place, then it is just a matter of relocating switches.... I like the grey one better for the look of the t-birds interior, more straight lines.
That one's from an 87-93 Stang. Hopefully all that is needed is to cut the radio/heater control area off and slide it in. lol. I like it better than the 79-86 Stang consoles.
The 94-up Stang console (light grey/white one) looks like a whole lot more work.
Here's some more pics of the 87-93 Stang Console
Keep this up to date. I am very interested to see the results.
LX-tasy has already done this in his car. The thread is here:

Pictures don't seem to be showing though.
That's that same console that was in my 93 mustang.
The two problem areas are the top part of the armrest cover and the hinge on the ashtray breaks easly. I can see that the armrest cover is broken in one of those pictures.
If you get it to work I might have to look for one myself since it's hard to but on the foot parkbrake with my hand.
Do me, and others, a favour. Keep good notes and pictures.
I only have the consolette. Could somebody do me a favor and take some measurements of their console at the places marked. Thanks.

You got me so excited about this I went outside in my boxers in the freezing cold to take these measurements. You gotta finish this thing now. lol.
I got 6 1/2" at the ash tray and 10" at the front.
LOL! Thanks for getting those measurements, especially in the cold half naked. Darkthunder will definitely finish this before me though. I'm trying to choose a console then figure out how to mate it with the dash.
ive got one from a 93 if you want to borrow it to see if it will work, i might have the e-brake handle too
Yes Indeedy! :D Thanks a bunch.
Man.. I need to take the time to make my E-brake functional again...
Does anyone have a Stang around? I need a pic of where the e-brake handle is mounted on the floor. Right now I going to just make a functional hand brake, but I want to make sure I get it in the correct general area.
Oh, I found a handle already. :) http://discbrakesrus.com/make/ford/ebrakehandle.htm And I still have the cables from my SN-95 rear brake stuff, so this 'should' be pretty darn easy.
Has anyone ordered anything for those guys (http://"http://discbrakesrus.com/")? I purchased the handle and adjustable cable over a week ago and I still haven't recieved my parts. Sent an email with no reply. =/
welll.... id sell you the stuff out of my 89 fox.... cept im going to be doing the same thing in my cougar... cept without the center consol.... i can try n come up with a picture or something if u still need it? hope it all goes well
if you need to look at the e-brake handle still i have the carpet and console out of my stang putting in the cage and d\s loop
If you could take some pics and post them here that would be awesome Herb. And apparently my package is in fedex limbo in Toledo.
