HERE ARE MY CUSTOM HOMEMADE TALLIGHTS!!!! ALL LED! I will change and add new pics on 12/20 of the lights with the sequential blinkers . some better pics
Looks good! I was gonna ask you to post a pic of them where you mentioned them in your "user's rides" post. Are those truck LED's? I've been working on a set myself for about four years now (projects don't move very fast with me). I'm taking a different rought, though - I'm reusing the stock lenses and filters, but with the red parts and backup lights cut out. The backup lights will be white LED, and of course they're gonna sequence. Here's what I've got so far:
More details, that looks really slick.
Was it a pain to get all of the LEDs aligned to where they looked correct?
Mine? No, it wasn't a pain - the LED's have "stand-offs" that keep them about 1/8" from the circuit board. I just soldered 'em all on at 90 degrees, then bent 'em down so they'd be at the correct angle.
The white ones I'll be using for backup lights will be a PITA, though - they are lacking the standoffs
No offense but it looks a little ricey but kudo's for making it from scratch. I would have to see with the lens on. Do you have it with the lens on? I think it would look different.
James
here are some better pics to see feel free to ask questions ill try to help with ideas!
Didnt show up for me?
I'm not sure if I like them or not. I would like to see some rear, 3/4 angle shots, please.
Kudos for the work man. Definatly unique.
they realy do look good on the car. i didnt even notice that the reflectors were out of em when i saw the car driving by
hey 1wldbrd were u asking me for 3/4 angle shots?? if so check out my pic in the users rides page !!! if thats not what u want let me know!
stuffed some trailer lights in the factory bucket, not a bad idea
my personal opinion, paint the stock bucket black
:iagree:
and polish the lenses up real nice and they'll be pimp. hades, you got me wanting a set now. :)
Two things. One, what does it look like with the factory red lens? Two, how about this as a suggestion, take some Night Shades to the clear lenses or black out the silver backing part.
James
ive been toying with the idea of blacking out the background and possibly smoking the lenses !!! tell me what you think everyone
I think they would like nice with the lens blacked out. They have that sprayon tint that looks nice and easy to remove if you dont like it.
Yeah those were the angles. Not bad, I agree with the rest of the guys though. I think paint the background black, and do a light niteshades to the lens. Very cool man.
Thunderchicken, So are we going to need to send you a set of lenses when you start making these things? I have a spare set right now, and need to know if I should hang on to them. Since I'd rather not drive around without taillights. Thanks
Paul
P.S. This is pressure to take the next step with all your badass Ideas. :grinno:
I wouldn't count on ever seeing them for sale commmercially - they are a LOT of work, which is why the project has been progressing so slow. Just removing the red and white lenses from the inner panel is a c - they have to be dremelled out, and to get them round one has to have a steady hand (which I don't). Hell, if I did start making 'em for sale, who would want them with a "please allow 4-6 years for delivery" tag? :hick:
I will likely make up a tech article on how I did it once they're done, but it is not a project for the faint of heart. You will need to start off with a complete set of tail lights, not just the lenses, filters or housings - all of it. You will also need lots of high output red and white LED's, and preferrably the ones with the standoffs so they can be angled correctly. Some circuit boards, some resistors and diodes, some epoxy resin, some black dye for that resin - as you can see, it's a big project.
It can only be done to 87-88 Thhunderbird and 85-86 Cougar lights, as well - other years/models do not have the required "smoked" outer lens
i wouldnt smoke the lenses untill you at least try blacking out the bucket. The blacked out bucket will almost give an illusion that the lenses are smoked, because there is nothing "bright" to reflect light off of, similar to how my windows looked tinted when i put black/gray seats in my car in place of just gray
Wow... that does seem like a lot of work. Well, maybe I'll hang on to them and one day give it a whack.
That is the only thing those lights need...yes, tint them out...otherwise, they look just like APC pieces...
