according to the coolcats 3.8 v-6 duel exhaust conversion
MAC makes V6 1-5/8" shorty headers for the 1994-1997 Mustang (part number TF3845) for around $230. Note the air tube sticking out from each one. You do not need this for a 1983-88 3.8 V6 on your Cougar, and will need to plug up the holes or have them welded shut. These shown are for the 1999-up Mustang; buying a 1994-97 part should eliminate those tubes.

So I am gonna say yes.
They will most likely bolt to the engine just fine, but will most likely not mate to your existing Y-pipe...
they will bolt to your engine, but not to the current exhaust
what you can do, is get an H-pipe from a mustang, it takes just a slight bit of "convincing" to fit, which is mostly just fighting it, and then use a mustang catback and have the tailpipes lengthened, the only thing im unsure of is if the exhaust will clear your oclumn shifter linkage
