Title: Converter trouble
Post by: sum_weirdo on December 12, 2005, 11:17:11 PM
It's been a few weeks since the engine rebuild and I'm still getting quite a vibration.  I've checked the engine and tranny mounts and a bunch of other things but now I'm fairly sure it's the new torque converter I installed.  Maybe it's misaligned.  Does anyone know a good way to fix it short of taking the engine back out?

make sure the drain plug goes through the hole in the flexplate and make sure it is tight.

Converter doesn't actually have a drain plug.  The old one did.

If it was misaligned that badly you'd be loosing fluid by now, the front seal would not take it... You are positive the converter didn't have a drain plug??

Does it viberate just revving the engine out of gear??? If not, its in the drivetrain(dirveshaft, rear end, wheels) If so, you may have the wrong flexplate, or harmonic ballancer...

Actually there was a welded patch where the plug was on the old converter.  And yes it vibrates when out of gear, the severity kinda varies from day to day.

K I loosened and alternately retightened those Torque converter nuts, everything looks good, but I still get that vibration.  It's going to be the death of me.  Those of you who've done the HO conversion (I haven't exactly but I do have a hydraulic cam that's very similar to HO and HO heads) did you get more vibration than before after you were done?  The engine rpms hang around 800 when in park, the needle drifts lazily up and down slightly...although that could be a variation of as much as 50 or 100 rpms.  I guess I could try some carb tuning...
