How about not letting posts in the lounge go in the post count. I think it would cut back on a lot of post whoring. Thoughts?

Personally I dont see why it even matters. I could care less if my post count even showed up next to my screen name in any of my posts...
I don't think we have much of a whoring problem here - some people (myself included) use the forum as kind of a blog, but I don't see people posting just to get their post counts up...
I just get annoyed when week after week the majority off the topics are things like "post pictures of your tree" or "I'm not at work today!" or "it snowed a little here today". IMHO this stuff is not the least bit interesting and makes me wonder if people don't post this stuff just to up thier post count.

Oh yea, and just searching through someone's (not going to name them) profile, In the last 110+ posts, only 3-4 have been outside the lounge.
So we arent allowed to create a thread to strike up any kind of conversation when some of us get bored out of our mind unless it has a valid point? Personally, I think its the BS threads that bring us closer together. It helps get to know one another and when we are actually talking about something a little more serious we have a better feel and understanding of what others are trying to say.
But, dont mind me. Im just leveling-up! :D
That's not what I'm trying to say. I don't find everything in the lounge interesting, that's fine. I'd just expect some of these threads to be posted in a nursing home forum, not here. Seems like some people seriously need to GO OUTSIDE more often ;)

hey buddy I started that tree thread. I have met alot of the people on this forum and consider them all friends. This forum is the only one that I post anything un car related. Its nice to know someones opinion on things other than what color you should paint your car. Personally I hate post counts. I like forums without them. I dont see this as even being an issue, only reason I'm voicing my opinion......you cut me down.
No! This is a technical forum. No bullshiznitting and no socialization. Close all non-car forums now! You have plenty of time to be social when you're dead. Don't waste precious time now. End all fun!

I kinda have to agree with the Cougarman on this one. Post count doesn't matter. I think post whoring was when you posted just for the sake of it in every thread you could. Would you rather half the posts in the technical threads be nothing but someone saying hello?

Here's a suggestion: (Carmen or Eric?) For anyone bugged by the majority of the content in the Lounge, why don't we make the Lounge its own section of the board in the same way the Racing section and Computer Stuff sections are? That way, if the Lounge bugs you, you can just minimize it and only see the on-topic car stuff.. same as how I keep the Racing section minimized most of the time. It sure beats bitching and whining about stuff in that section. (not like I would in the first place.. easy enough to just not read it unless someone ICQs me telling me something stupid is going on in there and I'll get a laugh out of it)

If there was more partition on the technical lounges people would prolbably post more there. I know I have started several threads to get people to start posting tech stuff but people read and never reply. Seems most people just want to hang in the lounge, due to there is nothing going on in any of the other threads. just my .02
How much more partition do you want in the on-topic forums? A lot of stuff is reposts, of which nearly all of us are guilty of at some point or another. The rest, well, it usually gets answered sooner or later.
I'm on three vehicle forums. I'll talk about two of them for comparison. This board has nearly 6,000 users.. the Dodge truck forum I'm on has nearly 19,000 users and covers a far larger range of vehicles than just two models (T-bird/Cougar) and a few years. (83-88, not counting the boxcars) This place ALWAYS *seems* busier to me than that place, with less than 1/3rd the registered users. I'd say we're not doing too badly here. (note I said *seems*.. it's possible the other board does more overall volume.. but then, it SHOULD)
Given the choice between the current on-topic post numbers and the alternative of having more posts per day and those posts including more from people like the old user "i'm gay as hell" or that guy that got banned, I'll take the status quo "for teh win".
How about we just eliminate visible post counts and rep altogether? I think most people here are smart enough to judge the value of the other users by what they post, not by post counts or passive-aggressive anonymous rep comments. You know the post count/rep system as a measure of individual contribution is flawed when someone like me has more rep than someone like Tom or Chuck, for example.

Admins need the post count visible so that we can prune the inactive users a few times a year, or to recognize a noob that needs, um, "realigned". ;)

BTW, if the "rep" system is so unpopular let's put it to a vote. I don't see any use for it personally, but some people live or die on their "rep" points. I'll start a poll in the lounge
Why keep the tech section then, obviously everyone is annoyed with it and noone reads it, Therefore it's useless. I get most of my tech from Corral anyway. the posts I have placed in the tech here were mainly to get more people talking in tech to find out everyones knowledge/skillset. Its always nice to know who to ask a question about a certain topic. And yes i realize im going to get flamed for this.
personnally I like the board just the way it is!! Some people just worry to much about things that are't important.

No, that's a good point and very valid. I think those of us that have been on this board for many years have just grown a little jaded when we see someone ask a question that we've answered literally dozens of times before. Me personally, I don't mind that. There will always be noobs to our cars and if we have to stoop down a little bit to help them out, so be it. However...one of the biggest gripes about the old board setup was that it had no usable search function. Well we have that now...but nobody seems to be using it, especially those that need to (aka noobs). Therein lies the Catch 22. Now I'm even-tempered and will always side with extending a hand, but that doesn't mean others will be the same way. It's like, we put all the good, useful threads into stickies, then we move them to their own section, then we have a search function and TWO reference sites in our logo at the top. And yet we still get a new thread about a very old subject, which most likely is already answered somewhere,
perhaps even that special best-of section that's right at the top where everyone can see it--gasp!!! As the saying goes...you can lead a horse to water...but you can't make it drink.
Sometimes I think the NATO way is the right way. When a noob posts there and it's a subject that's been covered multiple times, they get a response of "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION". And guess what? THEY DO. I don't think we should be board puppiess or anything, but hell, I'd be all for enforcing the search function like that.
And nothing against the Corral...but we will never devolve into that. ;)
