Ok so the big Super Ford Swap Meet was last weekend. My bro got a new T-5 for his Coug (the one up in the banner). He said I could use his old one in my TC if it would work. According to some guy down at Super Ford you only have to change one thing and then it bolts right up, but I can't remember what I have to change for the life of me. Any ideas? Thx
Pilot bearing/bushing.
Not sure of what one you need exactly though.
It's common for swappers to use the 4cyl tranny in place of the 5.0 unit and use a probe pilot bearing. But I believe it requires a custom bearing or the input shaft to be machined to go the other way... There is someone over on http://www.turboford.org trying to get this combo to work...
what about the gearing? will it be too tall for the 4 cylinder?
I really dont think you could just put that right in.I think the input shaft is to big, well the roller bearing shaft wont fit.It will fit but you are going to have to have a special bearing or bushing made. You can use the Probe if you are going to use a 2.3 tranny behind a 5.0 but its totally opposite now.You would have to get the input shaft machined down to the 2.3 size.
Also the gearing will be way to high for the 2.3 unless you have serious boost off the line or steep gears in the back.
Hope this makes sense.
Thanks,
Chris
Folks use them all the time behind 2.3Ts..but they are usually "built".
The bushing usually used for this purpose is a bronze bushing and not a roller bearing.
Here..found a link...

Look towards the bottom in the "Trans & Driveline" section.
$7.95 for the bushing.
That all being said, if your 2.3T is fairly stock...the gearing in that T-5 will be a bit much for it.
Hence why I said or bushing.I tried this about 10 years ago and it didnt work out to well. But then no one had high speed internet either, lol.
The 2.95 1st gear version would definatly be too mutch, possibly the 3.35 version would be liveable.
The input shaft on a V8 T5 is also I think about a half inch longer than the one on the 2.3L T5.
Anyway...I don't think it would be the first four gears that would necessarily be so bad, but that .60 (or whatever it is) overdrive...well, that wouldn't work too good.
The input shaft length is not a big deal..
where do you live? i got a 4banger t-5 in my shed
My ex would say otherwise.
And that is why she is your EX??? :flip:
NW Ohio...is it good?
wait, you're from jersey....that'd be a b**** to ship...
It actually wasnt the shaft length, she didnt have a pilot bearing that was a large enough diameter ;)
:rollin: :rollin: :rollin:
Tiny hiney HUH??? Well thats better than a tweenie weenie... :rollin:
i have a 88 turbo coupe with a built 311ci. I used the stock T5 out off the 2.3L. with a 302 bell housing and a 302 throw out bearing. Everything works just fine.
