Title: Im going to give up.
Post by: Tbird232ci on November 27, 2005, 06:36:22 PM
Took the TC to the track

first run was a shakedown, only had about 8-10psi in it because i just put the controller on, ran a 17 something, thats not important, second run, after having to "reconstruct" my boost controller, it made an insane amount of boost, blowing the upper hose off before i could lift, third run was a clean, and VERY dissapointing run

60ft-2.7

1/8- 11.2
mpg- 67.5

1/4- 17.14
mpg- 82.8

Even driving the car home, it made no power, i thought i blew out my bypass valve, but it seems to be fine, sounds as if it has a boost leak, but i didnt pull the intercooler off yet to mess with the hoses, i know my upper hose is about shot

ill take some time tomorrow to try to find out what the  things problems are, then finish up the mods i plan on and just drive the  thing, i chase more problems at the track than anything.

Well, i tore into the car, turns out that my lower IC hose blew off of its seat, an was leaking boost. Easy fix.

I also did a little bit of math, and if i were to get my 60ft down to a 1.9, i could have had a 15.60 or so, on 8psi, which isnt bad in all reality

So with full boost and a 1.9 what is your goal?

hey now, even if it was a low 17 second run, you still got 82 miles per gallon.

don't feel so bad. i ran both my tc's at the track last year. the auto ran an astounding 18 something. the 5 speed(after some practice) ran a 15.81 @ 86mph with a pretty good 2.13 60'. i boxed the control arms, installed subframe connectors and swapped in the 3.73's from the auto and it actually slowed it down due to ridiculuosly easy tire spin. powershifting just blows them away, oh well maybe time for some drag radials. the auto is being punished for it's slowness by getting a single turbo 408w. the cage and rearend prep is done. bwahahaha!

Big heavy car with small torqueless motor= slow. I never understood why Ford put these motors in the Bird/Cougars. Anyways, did you have your front sway bar disconnected?

the car makes torque, i just wasnt driving it properly, and i had a boost leak

i dont change anythign when i get to the track. the only thing i did was change my PRC settings. You cant call it a street car if you modify it at the track to run at the track.

I'm inclined to agree with you however it seems everyone and their mother takes that  sway bar off....

I agree and to make it more of a street car have 'em run radials. Not drag radial regular radial tires. Who drives around on drag radials everyday anyways?

Just because everyone does it, doesnt make it right.

Dont let the peer pressure get to you.

BUT ALL THE COOL KIDS DO IT!!

i drive on drag radials everyday and theyare incedible..  even in the rain and snow!!! you would be surprised

and youll go through many more sets of drag radials a year than i will go through in street tires in 3 years

the motors are not tourqueless, mabey tourqueless to you but not  for a 4 cyl they have plenty of grunt, and hey the turbocoupes get good gas milledge and also are great and fun cars to drive, have you ever owned a turbocoupe or do you own one now? if so i dont think your would have said what you said. and with the turbos there are plenty of cheap mods you can do to make more power, and putting a 5.0ho in them wont solve much either just makes the car heavier and less of a "handler"... im all for the 4 cyl :headbang:

torque with a turbo coupe is all in how you drive

when i do the PRC trick, where the rear stays soft, and the front still adjusts, if i get a good launch, it pulls the nose up pretty hard, you need to be able to slip the clutch with the RPMs up high so you have enough RPM and load to create boost, and come off of the clutch somewhat aggressivly, then boom, nose is up, and car is moving

the torque is there, its just no from idle like a lot of V8's

whats your timing set at? my first pass ever in my TC was a 17.2 @ 82mph, timing was way retarded, got it set right and it ran 15.9 @ 87.

So what does the torque curve look like?
http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5639&stc=1&d=1138476555
Peaks at 4 drops at 55 with peak of 220. Not a real good torque curve, but it is a 4cyl so most dont have a flat torque curve. Putting a V8 wont solve much either? Please tell me your kidding!

James:rolleyes:

What are your RPM's at launch?  Shift points?

Mine?

I havnt dialed in a launch, probably around 3,800 and i ride the clutch out a bit. I shift at about 6,000.
