Title: Got the T5 Swap Done!
Post by: 32VFoxBird on November 21, 2005, 10:41:33 PM
in my 88 302 tbird

only have that pic right now.

a buddy of mine gave me a real good deal on all the swap parts, including a rebuilt t5( :bs: ;you'll find out why in a sec), b&m ripper shifter, upr triple hook quadrant, adj. cable, freshly turned flywheel, 5 speed pedals, block plate, and a stock clutch fork. all for $450

now the problem..........not 10 minutes after i got it in and running.....3rd gear gets stuck, and wont come out of gear. luckily, i just took it down the road from my house, but it didnt smell/look too good leaving from a stop in 3rd gear. i think the new FMS HD clutch will be fine, but my spirits are shot. :(

no worries though. the guy i got it from said he would fix it, and not charge me anything more. (except for the fact I have to pull it out again. i was sooooooooooooooooooo wanting to go to the track last night in my "new" ride, but shiznit happens! hopefully it will be back together by this coming friday, then off to the track.

more track reports, as they come! :D

BTW, weight w/ driver was 3220# BEFORE the t5 swap. i also put on the mini starter at the same time, too. im expecting it down to about 3125'ish, now.

Sorry about the tranny being bad.Its really an easy swap to do but just heart breaking when you go through all that trouble and have to pull it back out.You are going to love shifting ( banging ) through those gears now.Just be careful with launches with slicks, it seems the extra weight of the bird likes to tear the T-5s apart. And due to the fact of the over hang on the rear wheels, expect some badass 60 foot times.
 Thanks,
  Chris

I read what you wrote, must be because more weight over the rear wheels then because the guy who raced mine launced about 5 T5s in a 3 year peroid.

it's definately weird with these t5s. i ran a 4cyl t5 for TWO years behind a stock 302 and sticky tires. i was at the track every weekend. never had a problem with it. Now...........a v8 t5 lasts 10 f'n minutes?!?!?!? :bs:

ah yeah...awesome feeling taking out for the first time isnt it man...sux that the tranny is lunched. IMHO, one of the single best mods you could do to a tbird. its so much more fun to row the gears. makes you feel more like an athleete than a spectator....lol

good job man. just break in that clutch a little before you go rippin it up. as specially at the track....cangrats....

I got done my T5 swap in my '88 bird last week, but blew a brake line on the jackstands testing the clutch adjustment. :(  Haven't really been able to test it out yet.

By the way, nice bird!  What colour is it?  Is it Smoke gray?

I have tossed 4 T5s out of my car last year alone.
But i beat the  out of them.

I have found that 4 banger T5s last longer then 5.0 T5s but that could be due to fact most 5L T5s are beat on as it is and 4 banger cant do much to to damange a T5 unless u cant drive it.
