May I ask what type of paint you used? How durable is it supposed to be? I look at everyday items such as remote controls or the paint on the center console of my car...and wonder why the paint I find in stores seems like nothing but  if it'll be touched at all.

My paint guy used the same paint he used to do the exterior of the car.  How durable is it?  I guess we'll see.

...yeah, I know the more expensive paint is durable. Didn't know if it was a spray can job or not

Haha, I've never seen the car's exterior, but the cage does look nice.  As far as one of the most badass birds here however...

Chuck, what are the plans for this car? Daily driver, autocross, open track?
Title: Cage finally painted
Post by: Chuck W on November 21, 2005, 06:13:08 PM
Jeremy-
The car is primarily going to be a "mule".  I have several "to-do's" lined up for future projects for it.  It's going to be my toy for the lack of a better term. I want to get some driving school time in and some open track stuff as well.  If I can swing it, I'd like to be able to hit the Silver State Classic with it, just for kicks.
I could have gone for a full halo and such, but it's not needed for most stuff I'm planning on doing initially, and if I need to halo it I always can and respray the front of the cage.  The door bars, while "low" are tied in underneath to the SFCs and the rocker reinforcements.

The whole thing is still morphing, but I want to get it back on the road come spring, so a bunch of the other projects for it will have to wait.  Winter priorities are getting the MegaSquirt installed and the Recaros recovered and the car back on the road.  There will be more pics as the assembly ensues.

Chris-
No real plans for it other than ditching the seat.  I'm going to use some ABS plastic covered with carpet to cover the bulkhead between the cabin and the trunk.  Don't need to add any more weight back there.
Not gonna do much with the seat area other than possibly mounting the small battery in the spot behind the pass seat (I may mount it down lower instead).

Nice cage.  Painting it the same color as the car looks good.  Kind of brings the outside in.  Excellent work.

Chuck
Instead of ABS plastic have you thought about that thin wood at Home Depot? You know the stuff that is kinda rough on one side and very smooth on the other side? Might be cheper then the ABS also and just as easy to work with.

I can get a 1/16" sheet of 4x8' black ABS for under $20, and that's going to be a hell of alot easier (flexible) to work with than wood.  I'm going to have to make holes and then slit it to be able to slide it up into place around the bars.

I have one sheet I'm going to use to replace the headline backer in the Z-7 with since it's a bit damaged and I may have enough left over to do what I need with this.

Ah ok.I never saw ABS for sale so I was unaware of its price.Where can you get that at?
 Thanks,
  Chris

Look in the phone book under plastics suppliers.  I found a place about 10 mins from my house that sells it.  I need to go back and pick up another sheet or two here soon.

chuck is an auto cross guy. He will never own/convert a car to a v-8 cause they are too nose heavy. He wants to do a inline 6 though.
