Title: Cannot Find Oil Sending Unit...
Post by: DMC24guy on November 15, 2005, 05:43:44 PM
Ok here is the story. I switched out the standard instrument cluster for a Turbo instrument cluster some time ago. I never got around to getting the correct Oil Sending unit to make the guage work until today. I have the correct sending unit, but cannot locate my current sending unit. I have an 87 T-bird, 3.8L V6. I have gotten under the car but can't seem to find it. I looked around the Oil Filter, and everywhere else but I just can't see it. Does anyone know where to specifically look to find the thing? Where is it!!??

I don't know personally but here's what autozone says.

On your 1987 FORD THUNDERBIRD, the OIL SENDING UNIT is:

UNDER HOOD, DRIVER SIDE, FRONT ENGINE AREA, LOWER      PART OF ENGINE, ABOVE OIL FILTER, MOUNTED IN BLOCK

Probably no help but, eh.

All I can say after enduring this 7 hour ordeal is....

Thank God it's over.

After Getting under the car and realizing I needed a Oil Sending Unit Socket to get the one that was already on the car off, I was stunned at the lack of space to reach the little sucker. Getting it out wasn't hard at all with the right tools. It was very small. This of course was where the problems started.

The oil sending unit I needed to get the guage working was 3 times as large as the one I had in there, and finding a way to make it fit turned out to take up a majority of my day. I first tried to screw it in directly, only to find that because the unit was so wide, the right side of it was getting stuck against the engine block itself. So, I went back to the auto parts store and asked if there were any of the same units, but more narrow. Nope. No luck there.

Instead I was given a T-shaped coupling to use with the sending unit. Unfortunately, that was roughly the same width of the Sending Unit, and had the same problem. It was getting stuck against the Block. After realizing that wasn't going to work, I went to a hardware store and purchased some nipples and joints.

After nearly 3 more hours of toying around, and finally getting so fed up with the lack of space, I removed the Oil Filter in a desperate attempt to get the Unit to fit. I ended up using 1 long nipple, and a L-shapped Joint (Which ended up facing up toward the hood) just to hook the  unit on. Luckily it worked out.....

(I can't tell you how frustrating it would have been to go through this entire nightmare and not have guage work.)

I don't know if any of you guys have tried this before, but I'll tell you this much: saying "Just change the sending unit" is much easier said than done. Anyone with a v6 Tbird out there whom is considering swapping the Base Cluster with the Turbo Cluster better think long and hard about having the peform the nightmare operation I just had to endure. I'm just glad it's over.

Yep. I had to backtrack a bit to your file list page and get the proper name.

I guess you didn't see the thread a little while back with the "official" part...
