Title: Draining Transmission Oil in the "X".....

Needless to say, the explorerforum makes me feel more stupid than the stupid person i am now. But well, still working in Dad cars. I noticed that the Oil tranny change may come at 80,000 miles. Of course, i dont know was the previous maintenance, and since the truck has 83,000 miles and runs very well, i want to maintain in that way the suv. I know that the ford OD transmissions are bad if they arent properly cared. Remeber, is a 96 v6 XLT 4WD
One sugested procedure , was, if i understand correctly:
1) buy 16 quarts of Dexron II-III or Mercon Oil . 2) Get a very big bottle, and measure the quantity of fluid... 3)go to the Oil cooler. There are two hoses. Disconnect one and attach a hoses with clamps . This will go to the Big bottle.... 4)Start the engine in Park, preferably a helper can do this. Look the amount of fluid in the big bottle, and every quart that gets out, replace with a quart of new oil. They say "its ok to turn off the engine" between quarts if its fast the amount of fluid... 5)Somewhere at the 12 or 13 quart, check the dipstick. Must be at the crosshatched area. If not, add more at little intervals... 6)Reattach all the hoses and be happy, your tranny now loves you...
The question here : I understood correctly ? Some of you did something similar ? This is a correct procedure ?

Does it have a tranny cooler? Check for that first. Second of all, you may as well change the filter while you're at it. There's not much logic in running fresh fluid through a dirty filter and pan. After draining the old fluid, pull the pan, clean it (leave NO lint behind), and replace the filter.

Thanks for the info. Now i have troubles finding the filter for that 4r55e...matter of time...

inside the trans on the other side of the pan. usually 3 bolts hold it in place.. none the less your gonna take a bath in atf not fun and verry slippery . good luck just some things i wont tackle on my moms exploder. and thats one

They do make a pan kit for the tranny with a valve so you dont have to pull the pan each time, If you going to pull it i would purchase one of these for the future. like cougarcoupe88 stated bathing in atf not fun.
