Title: MSD....worth it?
Post by: Red_LX on November 06, 2005, 01:34:53 AM
I've been thinking about buying an MSD box for years, but never really seemed to have the spare cash to get one. Now that my engine is done I've started thinking about it again, but I'm wondering if it's really worth $160 for an MSD 6A. I've heard some people say that they didn't think it was worth the money. Just curious if anyone here has one and what they thought.

Cant remeber if you FI or carb,  If yo have a carb yo have to buy a Dist to go with it,  makes it rather expensive,  FI good md will notice slight performance increase and better gas milage.  Oh If you go have a non comp contolrd vehicle get the MDS 6AL---same price with rev limiter.

For your average street car even with a decent amount of performance mods you won't see any difference, but I think it would be a good addition if you wanted to dress up your underhood appearance.

msd is a good upgrade.

an example we have been working on a 79 camaro with a 468 bbc car was fouling plugs out. swapped in a 6 box and had to jet it up 10 jet sizes.

carbed cars will benefit the most from it.

fuel injection also benifits with better milage, easier starting, better throttle responce.

and with high boost levels it helps keep the spark from blowing out.

I guess I was thinking along the lines of not necessarily adding horsepower, but for smoother running and maybe improvement in mileage.
Title: MSD keyword
Post by: BobNorway on November 08, 2005, 03:00:48 AM
The keyword with MSD is MSD.
Multiple spark discharge, if the first spark blows out the next one will get ignition.
If everything is perfect and every cylinder ignites every time then you won't get an improvement.
When was the last time everything worked perfectly every time for anybody?
With an MSD you can have a sticky injector, or a bit to rich mixture and get away with it.
You can put thousands into pistons rods cams carbs, but if you don't ignite then they are just pieces of iron(aluminum).
:D

I would just get the box, maybe the coil with it or soon after.

MSD makes a billet distributor for the 2.3L, but that's a lot more coin than I care to be spending right now!
