I picked up the GT40 heads today.WOW,super low mileage (around 23,000 miles),as clean as new,and ready to go.Now the questions...what do I do with the EGR?There are no smog holes on the back of these heads. My 'Bird has all of the smog equipment hooked up and functioning.Do I just get rid of everything (but leave the pump for the use of the pulley)? Will this adversely affect the car's performance?Do i remove the EGR and put a plate over the holes on the Spacer plate.A lot of questions,I know.Thanks.
If you don't need to pass a smog test(or visual), ditch it all. As far as the pump, can it and install a shorter belt. The smog system is a secondary concern to the EEC, won't affect how it runs.
I have no safety inspections or smog tests here in Oklahoma. Can I just fab a plate and block off the EGR holes on the spacer?Or,should I leave it alone and plugged in?Also,do I get rid of the smog tubes on the passenger's side of the engine and the tube to the H-Pipe?AND,do you know the belt length for a "no smog pump" 5.0?The A/C compressor is next to go.I've got to find a Mustang steering pump bracket to raise the pump so the belt will clear, and,so it looks "right".Not like I just pulled the compressor and something is now missing.
post your questions here if they cant answer ir noone can :D http://www.corral.net
ditch it all, i did and everything runs fine. blocked off the egr plate, no more air pump, or tubes, tube on the h pipe is pluged i welded it shut, but a bolt will work fine. if you dont have the holes on the back of the heads, great ditch that whole tube that goes from side to side, if not, you can get plates or plugs for it. and i forget the length of the belts, but its gonna take about 3 or so trips to the parts store lol. to help, i have no ac, no smog, and a underdrive crank pully and its 44"
Just as a hypothetical, what if smog equip is needed to be kept? How would one adapt their smog setup to work with those types of heads? It might help someone using "search" in the future.:dunno:
I'm doing away with my AC compressor also.I'm waiting to find a Mustang steering pump bracket first.I've got to figure out what to do with the EGR valve and harness, plus the two bundles of smog equipment wiring hanging off the back of my upper intake. What about all of that? Also, what was your routing of the belt without AC and smog? Thanks.
Warbird,I just don't know. The heads have no provision for the smag lines in the back of them.

(but that's just for no smog)
Thanks a lot.Just an even shorter belt for the A/C delete..
March sells an AC delet kit for 48 bucks. It's on my "things to do" list...

For the belt length, just get a string or piece of rope and run it around the pulleys in the same path the new belt will need to. Then mark the string and measure. That should get you close enough to have the right size belt. Just don't stretch the string or rope, then you might wind up with a variance of an inch or more and not have the right length.
Thanks for the string info.As far as the A/C delete,I want to do away with it completely. No extra pulley.I've seen the steering pump brackets on a few different cars that will raise the pump slightly and no more A/C.Thanks for the info on March, though.I may get some billet pulleys when the engine is ready.
