i may beable to get this car from my buddys job it's a 198? cutlass witha 305 and a trans problem (cant belive im gonna willingly go threw this again) anyway. it's a gm not to hard to change. so my buddy is gonna get the camarow at work and throw the motor and trans to his 2.8 firebird. and sell me the trans. it shifts fine and all that. so should i go for this car i will get the car for free so i mean thats cool. i guess i just got to find out how much it will coast to have 2cars insured
if i dont get it my buddy is gonna get the car and give it to his younger brother. hate to see the car get beat up like that . but it'll be my winter beater. oh yeah carbed 305.
i where i'm going i won't need a winter beater:D  :raspberry
but!! i will still be thinking of getting a daily driver soon;)
If your looking for something to get you through the snow without problems, I don't think that a RWD Cutlass would work too well.
But hey, if the cars free... why not.
I don't believe the 2.8 shares the same bolt pattern as the 305. But it may depend if its a B.O.P 305 or a cheby. Either way I don't think it will fit but then again I don't actualy know.
The 2.8 tranny will not fit the 305. GM was kinda like Ford back then - its 4-cyl and 60-degree engines had one pattern, its V8's and 90-degree V6's had another (actually there were two V8 patterns, the Chevy and the B-O-P). The 2.8 tranny would not last long behind a 305 anyway. It shouldn't be hard to find a THM-700R4 or THM-200 to fit it, though, or if overdrive isn't important to you, a TH350.
Where you're going, you're gonna need a storm shelter. :p
:spit: :laughing:haha :raspberry just remember where you live..it could come up from the east side.. via cuba and hook a slite left tord you then you will get all wet and blown:raspberry
It is coming toward me.. it'll just pass south of us, not land in the harbor like Charley did. We'll get tropical storm-force winds here, probably.
Think about gas prices too. 305's aren't easy on gas, especially when you're spinning the wheels a lot in the snow.
well this trans problem sucks. if it's not gonna bolt up. . i'll look into this a little more. well i shouldnt say winter beater. just a car to drive to not worry about bad things going on with the stang. shopping carts are evil
Actually, mileage aside(which shouldnt be worse than 20ish anyhow), it wouldn't be bad. Those transmissions are a dime a dozen, and will work from pretty muvh any GM big-bodied car with the same 305 or 350. Or, you can dump the Overdrive and run a TH350 or TH400, which are indefrigging-structable. You'd lose mileage though. Changing is easy.
As for winter driving, they aren't bad either. Their a heavy car, and get around fairly well. Make sure you have good tires though. Hell, I had a '78 Regal with a built 455 in it, a nasty shift kit, 2800rpm stall, and a locker in the rear, and drove THAT through a winter here in WIsconsin a few years back. Oh, don't use Nitrous on snow..lol
