so my power steering started making a humming noise when i would turn the wheel a while back. turned out i was almost bone dry of fluiud.
so, i put some in and its stilll at a good level, but the noise persists. i know its not supposed to be THIS noisy.
my pump dying? any know what im talkin about here?
mine does the same thing. probably time for a new pump
Yeah, the pump is toast. The powersteering fluid also lubricates the internals of the pumps. After even a brief time with little or no fluid will seize the vanes on the inside. Although it didn't seize, it won't provide the amount of volume as before and will always be noisey unless it is rebuilt with new vanes.
Well you could try a bottle of Lucas power steering fix. I've had all kind of luck with it. Havn't had to use it on my Cougar yet but my Ranger use to sing me a song. Its not quiet but its no were neer as loud with just regular power steering fluid.
sometimes they will quite down after a few days of driving .
time for a new pump then :)
when my t/c blew the p.s hose i ran it dry for about 20 miles
then drove it 5 miles to work dry
replaced hose took it a few days then it was quite again
Don't forget to find out WHY it was "bone dry".
in my TC, the fluid leaked out for months before i got it, and it was driven that way, the previous owner called it "HEMANual" steering
i put ATF in it, and its loud, but the steering works great
The Lucas Oil p/s fluid does work but it takes awhile to do so. I had a leak on one of my old cars...ended up using a whole bottle of Lucas stuff. It's real thick like molasses. The directions claim that it takes 500 miles but it's really more like 1,000 miles. Anyway, it worked, stopped the leak, stopped the noise, and I never added fluid to it again because of a leak. It's worth a shot for $7/bottle or whatever.
I've used it in my 'Bird, and it does work.Ford has the piest PS pumps.
