Title: Head Unit Compatibility for a '99 Explorer
Post by: fordman3 on October 14, 2005, 05:53:20 PM
Can somebody tell me where I could go to find out if a certain head unit from a 2001 Explorer is compatible with my '99 Explorer.  This is the unit I would like to get:

My '99 Limited Explorer has the Ford Mach sound system with a rear-mounted sub, controls for the 6CD changer mounted in the console, and wheel-mounted volume and tuning controls.  I'd like to see if the Pioneer Indash-6CD will plug right in and work with my other components.  My original unit is pretty much toast after my kid (she was 2 or 3 then) filled the cassette slot with pennies.  At first it just killed the display.  Over time it has started shorting out the whole system; it will pop on and off and do all sorts of other neat tricks.  It looks like this model:

I know the 2 units have the same physical dimensions and mounting designs.  I just need to know if I will have the same functionality with the Pioneer unit (wheel controls, changer controls, and amplified sub output), and if the existing harnesses will work.  Thanks for any pointers.

You need to find out if the Harness connectors are the same, They should be unless Ford recently changed them. Im going with a yes though.
