Well, something has snapped in my cranium....I've started the legwork to get the parts together for an Aussie X-flow-headed 200ci inline 6 turbo for the Tbird. This won't happen this year as I'm going to get the car on the road with the 2.3T for next season and enjoy it and get the other engine together and swap it in later.
The only way I would have considered even building a 200/250 I6 would be if I could get rid of the py US head/manifold abomination they have on them....and I have located a head, intake, etc for a decent price and I'm looking to get it sent my way in the next couple months.
It's pretty easy to mate the US 200/250 to the 78-87 Aussie aluminum crossflow OHV head.....some minor machine work, but nothing precision. I'd LOVE one of the Aussie OHC I-6's....but not on my budget :p.
I haven't decided on one or two turbos yet...and probably won't for a while. The weight isn't an issue as it will weigh the same or less than the 2.3T....The fun part is going to be building the exhaust manifiold/header :D Mating it to the T-5 will be easy too....I'll be doing that here soon in the Z-7...so the stuff will just transfer over (going to be doing the DP2.3T swap into it).
I think my 45K shortblock in the Z-7 should suffice as a donor ;) Or I might just grab another block....but I'm not sure I have any more room in the garage for another engine (have 5 in there right now.....)
Anyway, this should be pefect for really setting the Tbird apart and giving it a nice smooth powerful powerplant.....it should be fun :D
Well thats a difrent way of doing things thats for sure.
Good luck
what cars came with that engine/head?
The engine block itself is any US 200 or 250 inline 6..the head is from Austailian Fords (Falcons mostly, but a few others) from 78-87.
Well, you know by now I'll love to see it finished.. but I'm sure you'll get the usual number of "why not just put a 5.0/5.8 in it?" questions.. mostly from newer users who don't yet know you as the "King of 'pointless' engine swaps". :p
I wouldn't mind a 250 I6 project, but it just seemed to me like the 300 would be easier to get, and go EFI with. Ideally, I'd like to get a working F150 w/ a 300 that needs a rebuild, and swap my 351 into that and use the 300 (after a rebuild, obviously) for the car project.
Heh.. saw you fishin' for 200 stuff over at ford-fox.. figured a post like this might show up sooner or later, over here. :p Good luck with it.
Yeah, I want to get the Tbird back on the road first....but with all the other work I'm putting into it.....it "needed" something else, and I've always liked the Aussie 6's....this closer to that and with a little work will really scream...
I think it will be sweet to have that engine in a bird. I am a huge fan of off the wall stuff for the sake of being different. My pointless swap would be to put a 5.0HO with a 6 spd. in a 92 Taurus SHO. At this point it is all I can do to pull off the basic 5.0 HO/T-5 swap into my 85 bird.
Bird351 will be humping your leg when you do this swap.
will the head fit on the 300 six?
Nope...just the 200/250's
On that SHO idea... after you take out the Yamaha motor you can drop it into a smaller car, let's say, an escort or something.
How about taking a SHO engine (or two) and throwing it in a Topaz? Oh wait...someone is: http://www.tempotopaz.com/main/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=88 (http://"http://www.tempotopaz.com/main/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=88") :)
Crazy...It was pretty quick with just 1 SHO engine
A new guy at work wants to look at my '88 T-bird for a work car.. so if he buys that, (since you stopped responding) I'll have room for and a little money towards buying my own I6.. be it in a car or otherwise. I can appreciate Chuck's project, obviously.. but I wouldn't exactly jump him over it. :p
Saw one of these in the gas station a few minutes ago, and didn't mug the guy for it:
Bird a car purchase over 1000 miles away doesn't look to be in the books right now. sorry. But I bet you still hump chucks leg.
Well, I did wonder why you wanted to try it in the first place.. :p (a car purchase 1000 miles away)
Well, hopefully I'll have a firm price and an order placed here soon for the parts.
The only other thing I need to source is some forged pistons for the US200. I've seen a couple sets float by on evilbay...so I should be able to locate a set.
Sent off deposit today. Should have parts here in a couple/few weeks. :D
good to know. I wanna see how this goes.
Hey Chuck take a look at this!

Yup, that's the head and intake and such that I'm getting, but I didn't want the X-flow bottom end. That guy blew me off about pricing for the pieces that I wanted....so to hell with him, I'll give my money to someone else.
Well, at long last, my parts are finally Stateside. They're still in LA and I'm waiting for even up with the guy and get them to me. I'll have some pics of the stuff when I have my hands on them.
The delay was in OZ. The contact there took FOREVER to get them shipped. Good thing I wasn't in a rush :p
You're crazy man.
You're just now figuring that out?
cwarren, I always thought you were pretty weird, but an x flow I6 is crazy. You are the man!
have you been to fordsix.com the people there wont call you crazy for this.
That's where I got the info.....
Ok they have FINALLY been shipped to me. I should have them the beginning of next week. I'll snap a few pics of the new goodies when they arrive.
thats gotta be some kind of a record man....
how hard will the swap be? cus for some reason a straight six sorta turns me on too...
Mating the head to the US block is not too terribly hard. No real precision work there.
The first package arrived today...to the house instead of work. Nothing to look at as it's the box o' misc hardware...the "cool" stuff is either at work or will be coming next week.
At long last!!!!
The rest of the parts finally showed up today...2 big boxes
Gotta love it..the box that had the head/rocker cover and a couple gaskets only weighed 60# :hick:
Here's a couple pics of the bulk of the parts

Covered in real Austrailian grime!!! It's amazing how light that head is.
Next is a better pic of the plenum and the fuel rail.
Check out the fittings on the fuel rail! No py quick disconnects!!

Once I get a free moment I'm going to get the head stripped down and get it cleaned up and see what I need to do about valve guides and seats, etc.
So finally after 6 months, the parts are here and once I get the 200 out of the Z-7 I can REALLY get into the conversion.
HOLY that is one hell of a setup. usualy the i6 intakes iv seen look like a ported brick with a air filter on top of it... that looks all kinds of efficiant.
You might be swaying me from my desire to use a 300.. :p
Eh, if I put the I6 plan in anything, it might be the Mark.. and I think I'd rather have the extra cubes. 250 at least.
is that a scorpio in the background?
Dayum, Chuck! That is cool! I can't wait to see the finished product. Be sure to keep us updated
bad @$$
thats about the same as the fuel injected intake for a 300. nice to see people that like the sixes. sounds like alot of work but it should be fun. are you going to turbo it or anything? a crossflow turbo 200 in a fox bird or cougar would be cool.
:rollin:
What do you think? :D
I really like this. I kinda thought about beefing up the 200 that was in my Fairmont before we scored a built up 351C/C4 combo for $100.
my bad. i wasnt thinking when i asked that question. who wouldnt turbo an engine like that.
I cant wait to see this in there, prolly be a year or two knowing chuck, but it will be cool
Been waiting forever for the twin sho topaz guy to update. Man I wanna see then
OK, this has been on hiatus for long enough. SEVERAL things have been in the way of any forward progress but with the moving of the '83 to another storage location, I have my garage for the winter to work on a couple projects (well actually 3, but only one applies to this forum).
I finally began stripping down my US 200 longblock to get to the point of being able to do the block and head mods I need to do to make this happen.
Just for the pic ws I sat the Aussie head on the block just for grins.

I'll get the last of the external stuff stripped, then organize things a bit and start getting the internal bits apart.
hooray, it LIVES!
What bell housing will mate it to a T5? Is this the same setup that's on the Aussie DOHC 4.0L I6?
It is a US BB200 block, which uses 2/3's of the SBF bell pattern. Thus I'll use a 5.0 bell.
No, it is not the DOHC set-up...you see any cam pulleys? ;) It is the predecessor to that. This head is the late EFI version.
I know your engine is not DOHC. I am running emissions on an Aussie DOHC I6 right now, so I'm familiar with what they look like.
I was asking if the DOHC I6 uses the same bell pattern that yours does, ergo the same bell housing.
Nope different bell.
It the bell unique or is there something in the US that works?
No US bells work with the Aussie blocks. You need an OZ or NZ bell.
I'm using a US block.
those pictures are a blast from the past, i had the 200 in my 69 Falcon, It was bulletproof. Ive thought of doing this swap but not quite as radical. I didnt know the AU heads were so easy. Good Luck
i was telling a guy at work and everytime i said the CI numbers he kept saying they were chevy :hick:
