I am getting ready to swap in my HO and i want to change the rear main seal before i do but i dont have experience with ford engines and I was wondering if anyone could give me a quick rundown of how it is done? Thanks for any help

I'm in the midst of a 302 rebuild and my rear seal popped loose when I took the oil pan off. But it's visible from the rear of the engine, maybe you can work it out with a screwdriver.
all I can tell you, is that my dads station wagon had the rear main seal changed out a couple of times and it still leaks lots of oil.
Replacing the rear main is no problem if you already have the engine out. The best way is to us a seal puller, but if you don't have on a flat tip screwdirve will work if you careful not to score the race the seal sits in. I'm going to assume seeings how this is an HO it has the round seal instead of the split seal. When installing the seal I use a piece of wood to set againest the seal and then gentely tap it into place. And one more thing, make sure you put the seal in correctly, or you be dumping your oil out the rear main.

i think 83 or 84 was the last year of the 2 peice rear main seal. all i can say is be very gentle. i used a seal puller on mine (88 one peice) to remove it, wiped the race clean and placed the new one in position with the old one on top of it and tapped it in very gently in a crisscross pattern untill it was seated. its not hard, jut needs to be done carefully...good luck man...
