Title: Thumping sound when braking
Post by: blackcatdaddy on August 30, 2005, 02:01:32 PM
I know what it sounds like when your  rotor warped but this is a whole different story. I started hearing a thump at first but now it's several thumps when I pess on the brake. This thump does not happen unless I slowing down. I don't hear it once the vehicle is still. By the way I have an 88 xr-7 with a stock setup. I had my brakes changed less than a year ago. Do I have some other component failing on me. I have not not noticed any persormance decrease.

Possibly your strut mount in the front?

I've heard them to make a thumping sound like you're describing.

yah, the struts (or other front suspension parts) can make a thumping due to increased load when breaking, do you also hear it over larger bumps?

I know what it sounds like when your caliper is warped but this is a whole different story.

I had similar issues and was losing brake fluid pretty regularly. I couldn't find the leak as it didn't leak enough t puddle or leave drops. I put the car on stands this weekend and found the driver side caliper was the culprit. My noise is gone, but I also had a tie rod end bad on driver side that I found when changing the calipers. I changed this also. Don't know for sure which was making the noise, but it is gone. And WOW what a difference in the front end. No more 'bumps and thumps' and so much smoother on the highway. My tie rod end was so bad that I was shocked to find it still attached to the car.
