Title: $50 iBook sale
Post by: oldraven on August 16, 2005, 04:42:39 PM
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/08/16/computer.frenzy.ap/index.html

A rush to purchase $50 used laptops turned into a violent stampede Tuesday, with people getting thrown to the pavement, beaten with a folding chair and nearly driven over. One woman went so far to wet herself rather than surrender her place in line.

:rollin:

People threw themselves forward, screaming and pushing each other. A little girl's stroller was crushed in the stampede. Witnesses said an elderly man was thrown to the pavement, and someone in a car tried to drive his way through the crowd.

:disappoin

What is this, Armageddon? Ragnarok? Nope, a 4yo iBook sale.

I saw that report today...people are idiots. When they move the sale to Richmond International Raceway, you know they're expecting people to stampede. I feel sorry for the people that got hurt...but at least they have good taste. ;)

Here are some photos of the "event": http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD/MGArticle/RTD_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031784469916

The sad part...you know these people are just going to dump them on eBay for profit. Historically you will never find an Apple laptop cheaply, and they know this. For 4 years the computers were helping kids learn; now they are the epitome of people's greed. How sad.

I don't care what they are selling its not worth standing in line from 4:30a.m. till when ever to get it. Especialy if its a 4 year old laptop. Thats like wating in line to buy a Pacer.

Kinda like the lineups at the gas stations the other day. Every station in metro Halifax jacked their prices up to 112.9 cents/liter (about $3.56 US per US gallon), while one station in Sackville left it at the relative bargain price of 107.9 cents/liter. Sackville Drive, our main street, was plugged from one end to the other. Traffic was backed up for miles. For the sake of 5 cents per liter. My T-Bird holds about 80 liters, so if I were so stupid I could've saved a whopping $4. Of course my car probably would've idled that $4 worth of gas away. I can't imagine waiting in a lineup for an hour or more to save four dollars...

a person is smart, people are stupid. and those that aren't computer literate don't realise a 4 year old laptop is a POS that they won't be able to do  on. but OMG LAPTOPS FOR $50!! have fun. 90% of them will be in a closest in 3 weeks cause they can't fix em, and don't want to pay to get them working. You wouldn't believe what people will do to save a few bucks with computers. I worked at computer shows for awhile, and people would be the cheapest of the cheap, no matter what. 350 for a computer, they guy down there has one that is "better" for 239. I always told them to go ahead and buy the cheap one, they will be back in 2 weeks at the next show getting it fixed cause it broke already. but ooo.. i save 50 bucks that makes it better.. stupid stupid people.

yah. I can't believe how people will line up for a few cents savings on gas. you run your car for an hour to save 2 bucks, but you just used 4 bucks in gas and wasted an hour of time. lame asses.

This sale has been brewing for about 2 months. The way it was done was totally haphazard and they should have known this was coming. When Henrico County officials announced the sale initially, there were people booking flights from overseas to get there first. Then they decided that Henrico Co. residents should get first shot at them (because their taxpayer dollars went into buying them in the first place). And then it got moved to the raceway because of the expected high number of people. Well, duh, it still wasn't enough preparation...look at the news clips. Totally botched handling.

I have a 4-year-old iBook identical to the ones Henrico Co. sold. It is far from useless...in fact, it's running the latest Mac OS with no problems. It also has the wireless card (B, not a G, but still) and has never even crashed once. A $50 iBook is a once-in-a-lifetime deal, believe me...I paid well less than $500 US for mine and feel it was a great bargain. When I feel like going wireless but don't want to carry the bulkier 15" Powerbook around, the smaller 12" iBook is perfect. And its battery lasts longer--5+hours vs. 3.5 max with the Powerbook. It definitely gets used quite a bit. Current values on those iBooks are roughly $300-400 US.

i did say worthless. but the ibooks are a higher quality than IBM compatibles. but most of these users won't be able to deal with getting them where they need to be. it was a mess they just should have donated them to another school.

They should have taken everyone's names and put them in a big bowl and then just drawn names and had the people come up to get the computers.  It's better than the mass hysteria that ensued.
