Title: burnout contest
Post by: cougarman on August 07, 2005, 03:01:41 PM
well i went yesterday to the burnout contest in fowlerville, made a little smoke but my engine got hot and burnt three spark plugs up! has anyone ever done this without a blower or nitrous?

were you pinging at all? It should have been hard on your engine, but it shouldnt have burned up unless you were pinging I dont think. I have  done similar things, but never in a large group or even legally.

Too much air , not enough fuel AND/OR wrong heat range on the plugs are usually the culprits.  Seeing as your running a naturally aspirated setup I'd guess your running the stock heat range on the plugs, which should be OK.  So I'll start with the questions now......

1.  What mods have you done to this motor, if any?
2.  Have you checked your fuel pressure recently?
3.  How old (in miles) are the plugs?
4.  Are all 4 plugs in the picture above from the same bank?
5.  What kind of shape are your o2 sensors in?

The plug I'd be most worried about is the first one on the left....Where did you pull that particular one from?

my mods are edelbrock rpm intake 24lb injectors 255 fuel pump accel regulator b303 cam 77mm mass air and throttlebody long tube headers. the o2s are a year old last time i checked my fuel pressure it was good!? i replaced the plugs before i went to the track 2 weeks ago, the really black plug came from #8 and they go in order down the same bank 7 6 5 . the first plug looks like they gap is closed but actuallly the electrode has dropped down! im not sure on the heat range on the plugs but they are motorcraft awsf 44c.

Check your timing and fuel pressure again.  If those are within specs go 1 step colder than stock on the plugs.

as in fowlerville MI?

and not much of a contest when you have stop blocks.. then it is who's tires last longer and make the most smoke.  :flame:

Yep, Fowlerville Mi. The blocks are mainly for safety, some of these guys get carried away. : ;)  It's actually a car show, the burnout is just one of the activities. :D

Here's the guy who runs the show, 69 GTX, 440 tunnel ram dual quads, the guy has had it for 26 years. (also, he is not using blocks!!)

I live in williamston. I didn't know there was a car show going on! If you live in the area I will have to come see your car sometime!!! (as I don't have one anymore and miss the hell out of owning a 'bird)

edit: fowlerville free fair?

Yea, it's called the "American Dream Show", every year around this time. We're from Howell, the next little town down the road! :hick:
Last couple years, they moved it to the fairgrounds, more room.

Wow 23deg,what fuel are you running? Jet fuel?
