theres 2 mint ones for sale right down the road from my house...one fully restored if not original and another pretty well modified with chevy stuff and what-not...lol
the blue stripe on that looks tits man...
The powers of the darkside have swayed your father :giggle:
Nice car....needs a 383 with a nice TPI setup!
I had one of those! Actually, I had two, but the second one was just like that one except white with blue velour interior and blue stripes. The glass was factory tinted a nice pale blue, too. It was a beautiful car, if only it didn't have that shiznitty 301 boat anchor in it. The first one I had was a '78 Trans Am with a '70 LT1 chebby (you should've seen the adapters to make the shaker, originally designed to fit a 400 Pontiac, work on a SBC). It also had the WS6 package, which back then was a suspension package - rear discs, heavy duty shocks & springs, etc). If only the '80 Formula had that engine and suspension I'd probably still have it. Of course I had both of them back when late 70's, early 80's Firebirds were sub-$1000 cars ($600 for the T/A, $800 for the Formula, to be precise). I sold the Formula and bought my first T-Bird, an '85 base V6 model. Believe it or not, that 2-bbl V6 would run rings around that 4-bbl 301. Boat anchor, I tells ya!
One of these days I will have another 77-78 T/A and will stuff an EFI LT1 or LS1 engine and 6-speed in. I know, Chevy engines in Pontiacs suck, but there are no cheap, widely available EFI Pontiac engines that I know of. I want the looks of the 77-78 with the reliability and power of modern EFI.
So Shawn, what are your father's plans? Resto? Restomod? Is he gonna use the 301 for a doorstop (assuming it has a 301)?
its a 301, right now he just wants to get it running right, put a waterpump on it, fix the body work, get it painted, new seats and carpet, and drive it, dont let the pics fool you, its rough around the edges, and that blue stripe looks like complete shiznit, it looks like 3m painters mask
my dads not really a hot rodder, he just wants a decent cruiser, and something that sounds good, so we're going to mostly restore it, im trying to get him to stick some T/A ground effects on it, keep the formula hood, and repaint the car black, the nose is torn up bad, so it needs a replacement, the previous owner got into an accident, duct taped it all back together, and painted the duct tape, my dad and I threw a fresh coat of gloss black over the tape, and entire nose, just so it didnt look like a total POS sitting in the drive way
tomorrow im going to set out on cleaning up the interior, possibly throwing a coat of wax on it, then finally doing a little bit of clean up on the red bird, it became a parts shed
My cousin has an '80 Turbo Trans Am that he bought from my aunt who bought it new. It has the infamous 301 but it's all original right down to the paint and decals with like 21,000 miles. He lives down your way so you may see him around from time to time.

ive never seen the car, but it looks sweet
my aunt used to have an 81, and while it was...well...it was still slow...it was a POS, constantly having problems, i think it ended up getting junked
TPI? ugh
TPI was great in stock form for a 350, but you need a full aftermarket setup, SLP runners, edelbrock base, and a hogged out plenum, and you still dont make much power in the upper RPMs, then stroking that 350 to 383, that TPI would choke it even more
my buddy is building a 383 stroker for his 90 Firebird, carbed, and looking to run 12.80's in the brackets
wow shawn, no maybe you can get that nice 5.0 I gave you into your bird????
I know. My buddy has one in an '80 Malibu runs a 12.20
Tpi engines only look pretty in my opinion. They are shagyer than a 5.0. I know cause I got both beside each other in the garage!
a little progress in the project, my influnce on my dad is showing through, he's letting me figure out how to get these on the car:

Bad. Freaking. Ass.
NOOOO
wats wrong with the wheels that are on it now?
the current wheels are just...cheesy, they look cheap, and chincy to me
theyre a steel wheel, Rally design, with a center cap and a beauty ring, if you have a performance oriented car, or one that looks fast, you cant have that cheap looking shiznit on it
Aluminum > Steel 4-evar.
*cough snowflakes cough*
the snowflakes that came on the TA's are only 15's though, and ugly
Can you say "Smoky and the Bandit"?
can you say "wrong year" ;)
No he's right. In the movies they had a 77 or 78, 80, 81 in them so he is actually right.
And you my friend are wrong. Technically. Smokey and the Bandit starred a 77 Trans Am were as Smokey and the Bandit II and III Starred an 80 and 81 model. And thunderjet302 did say Smokey and the Bandit, and he spelled it wrong.
Sorry to Get technical but just couldn't pass up the chance.
:flame:
:rollin: :rollin: :rollin:
Part II was with an 80 Trans Am
Part III was with an 82 or something( 3rd gen TA).
They still made the sencond generation Trans Am in 81. The third movie had a third generation trans am in it. And the third movie sucked royally :D
You will also find that the 80 in the second movie is identical to the one that my cousin has that I posted a pic of on page one.
But of course you're all forgetting the fact that in none of the movies did a Formula Firebird star in. They were all Trans Ams, so wrong year or not, it's the wrong car :D
friends of mine owned an 80 TA "Bandit Special" or some . don't really know much about "those kinda cars"
A little paint and most people won't be able to tell that it ain't a 77 ;) . Jk. I think that it would look good in solid black. One of the guys who delivers supplies to my work has a 78 Trans Am which is getting a 69 GTO Ram Air 400. He's painting the car a light blue and keeping the outside as close to stock as possible. It's going to be a pretty cool sleaper.
