The battery sensor on my 87 cougar beeps a lot. The battery is fine and does not have a bad charge. I was wondering what the problem may be and where to find the sensor at. All the other gauges work fine. Thank you.
The sensor is built right into the cluster. It simply monitors system voltage. If you have a bad connection, or if your battery really is low or high, the alarm will beep. Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running, with a digital volt meter. If the voltage is above 13 but below 16 your dash is lying to you. If it's outside of that range you've got charging system problems.
I have checked the voltage and it is at 14 regularly. The battery sensor still beeps. However, the sensor in the cluster says the battery is in the normal range. Is there a way to overide the sensor? Or a way to fix the problem with out buying a new cluster? Thank you very much.
some one please help................. there is voltage on the battery the gauge even reads in the normal zone on the dashboards cluster. Any help would be appreciated. THANK YOU!
When the armature in my alternator went bad, it caused the brushes to bounce (as explained by my auto-electric repair guy), causing intermittent loss of feed from the alternator. Never had a low battery problem but the beeping was driving me nuts (on the highway for an hour when this happened). A fresh alternator (IIRC he rebuilt it) cured the problem.
BTW - for good measure clean all battery terminals, solenoid terminals and chassis grounds as well as your starter connectins. Apply dielectric grease to all the above. This may or may not be related to your problem but in my experience, 20 yr old electrical connections, especially exposed to the weather, can wreak havoc on your sanity. Plus ensuring full voltage to your electronics never hurt idle quality and my dash function improved dramatically when I did this. (my oil pressure read a false "HIGH") Best of luck.

Ok Thunder maybe you can assist me I did all the above..I also started a thread and no response..Help! Ok battery light comes on reads normal. Tested battery 12.6 and when started 14.+ And tested the fuses all read good . Do you know where the Plug is for the OBDI unit is in a 1991? And where might I find wiring diagram for a door with electric power to all window, locks, and mirror? I'm stumped and frazzled. Susan Ann
P.s. after 6 hours is still holding the same when checked with multi meter thing ohmeter. LOL! Ok can't think off to bed will try again tomorrow looking for something else it could be..thanks much
