Title: 5.0 HO valve covers or a tad taller equal type *solved*
Post by: jcassity on June 13, 2017, 07:02:48 AM
THis is for my son's build we are doing, need the following part.
5.0 HO valve covers or a tad taller equal type
we are running studed heads with very long retainer nuts on 1.6 roller rockers.  the stock valve covershiznit the valve covers.  We do not want to run those very tall ford motor sports covers, i have a pair of those,, actually open to trade if you want.

I understand the cobra valve covers fit as well, i can find usa made types for sale new that are like Re-pops of oem.

I was recently told that stock HO Valve covers will fit because they are taller in profile than stock.
Open to anything you have lying around you would let go of to help solve this issue we have.

Please if you will call me if you have this part, i am having trouble loggining in here consistently to check PM's.
My home office number is 304 772 3411, i am scott cassity, located in Gap Mills Wv 24941.

Even with the HO covers you will likely need to remove the baffle and grind down the raised mounting surface for the baffle on both covers. I had to for my TW170 heads with HO covers. I don't know if HO covers are actually taller so you may want Play-Doh the offending lifter with the baffle removed and see how much room you really need.

thanks John,
will do that.,, i get what you are saying.

i am having my rocker arm retainer nut cut down removing what i measured to be .255 so that the hex head is almost flush with the top of the rocker arm.

after that is done, stock covers would fit only if i double gasket it.

Keep an eye on that lock. You may introduce some binding at full lift.

When I did mine I used the driver side (non baffled) cover for mock up since I wanted to try and keep the baffle. It has the same raised mounting. If I screwed up it wasn't critical. The main interference was the nut of the exhaust lifter on rear lower corner when checked at #1 cylinder.

can anyone with a stock HO engine confirm the valve covers height value and are taller than non HO?

I will see what I can do later this evening. It will an outside measurement and not accurate for what you want to know.

Ok....I tried to put a straight edge across the top crest of the valve cover and measure from the head . Intake side I came with approximately 2" and exhaust side approximately 3.5". Hope that helps a little.

I glued two thick (1/4"?) cork/butyl valve cover gaskets together and used mini-studs for the valve covers.  It added about 1/2 inch of clearance, which is just what I needed.  This fix was for a 66 Mustang with a 97 5.0L with 1.7 Cobra roller rockers and stock 66 valve covers (stealth).  This fix for additional clearance may also work for you.  Just a thought.

Stock valve covers (HO) did not work with the Cobra roller rockers, either, without clearancing or removing the baffles.

Sorry I can't answer the HO vs non-HO valve covers, though. :)

is this a carbed or efi motor? If its a efi upper intake you have to watch how tall the covers are cuz they will interfere with each other.

i have studed heads ,, the stockers are clearing if i double gasket but.. id rather be safe.

You could bolt these on as is or mill them down for just the amount you need or have them TIG welded right to you covers or I have even heard of people putting them together with epoxy

yeah, i was thinking that route and discovered i am finding 1'' or larger as the only option.
price point compared to covers is oddly higher than i expected as well.

FWIW -- You can run a tall valve cover with a 1 inch spacer for the upper and lower intake manifold.

This WILL clear a stock hood. We're blessed with more room under a hood than a fox platform Mustang as far as height is concerned. The valve covers I have are VERY tall. I run a 1 inch spacer AND a 3/8ths inch spacer because I had interference from the throttle linkage with just the one inch. I had to bend the metal tube on top of the throttle body a bit to clear, but you may not have to (I run a 75 mm throttle body).

It all clears. It's TIGHT, but it clears.

I solved this issue by:
-omitting the 1.3'' locking nuts and replacing with .9'' locking nuts
-use of factory Explorer metal valve cover gaskets siliconed to the heads.
-use of cork gasket on the valve covers.
-all items clear stock valve covers now.

same set up, but mine didn't clear.. :toilet: and if I remember right, it wasn't the tube that was the problem, it was the front of the upper intake, but it's been a while

That's interesting. I had fairly new motor mounts when I did it. They were in the car about 2 years and had maybe 3,000 miles on them....
