Title: Wheels - 1984 TBIRD
Post by: atengnr on October 08, 2016, 11:07:32 AM
Hey all, have an 84 Tbird, just finishing getting repainted (black).  I am wondering what the poopular wheel options are to improve the look of this car.  Have the steel wheels with wire hubcaps currently that I am not a fan of.  I have seen posts here about the TRX wheels, which look quite nice from what Ive seen.  Are there aftermarket wheels that people have found to look nice?  Also is it easy to correct for tire diameter on the speedo pickup?

Thanks.

The TRX wheels are a great choice and are period correct. You wouldn't have to change your speedometer gear either. Any 4 lug wheel that fit a Fox body Mustang should work. I went with 17'' Saleen S/C replica wheels w/245/45 tires. Late Model Resto had a speedo/gear calculator at 1 time to get the correct gear. Good luck and post some pics when you can.

Thanks.  Anyone have TRX wheels for sale??

Heres a pic of the old lady as is currently.  Its a 3.8L, which I like because I had 2 of these cars back when I was a teenager and recall spending alot of my free time working on them :), but I enjoy the memories and the familiarity.  Its a work in progress....Bought in 2014 with 52K miles, was in OK shape, but had that aweful add-on vinyl roof with circle side windows, and the lincoln-like deck lid.  So, I ripped that off and exposed some rust from this add-on, and lots of rivet holes, which at least is now fixed.

X

You can get new TRX wheels from Late Model Restoration now..... But I think they are 16'' & are currently out of stock( not 100% sure on that)... You could go with the 10 hole wheels as well( some called them phone dial wheels lol ). They are 15" and easy to find.

Please note the TRX rims currently available new are a different style wheel than the Thunderbird versions.  They are direct swap and will fit with no hassles, but if you want correct wheels, those are not the ones.  The factory made Tbird TRX wheels are metric wheels and tire size.  Bottom line is Metric Tires are VERY VERY expensive to purchase new.  I have a second set of correct TRX rims i can part with if you want to go with that route.  They would need to be re-finished as well as tires purchased.  There are other factory options such as 10 hole rims or Turbine rims, 8 hole phone dial rims, Snowflake Turbo coupe wheels.  Do some research.  Most of the rims i mentioned can be had cheaply.
