Hey have this 84 Tbird and window motors work but Windows don't move. Pulled off door clip and can't see exactly how to remove window motor. I assume that there's a gear drive on the motor which is stripped as the driven gear looks good. Is this a common failure?? Could someone describe how to get to the window motor??

Strange that it would be on both sides at once, but the issue is the nylon spools inside the motor drive mechanism being broken or worn. Good news is that part of the mechanism is serviceable and repair kits are available. You will have to remove the motor and associated mechanism from the door to repair it. The window lift mechanism is retained with large rivets that will have to be drilled out. From there, unplug the motor and remove the entire mechanism through one of the larger openings on the inside of the door (panel removed). It will take a little wrestling and a bit of profanity, but the whole rack and lift mechanism will come out.
I purchased a large blind rivet squeezer from harbor "fright" for $20 that allowed me to reinstall the entire thing once repaired.
To remove the motor only drill 3 holes where there are indentations in the door skin. Those are directly lined up with the bolts on the window motor. Drill it big enough to get a 1/4 inch extension in there and then put the extension through the hole and reach in and put on the socket. Should be a 10mm.
You only need to remove the motor, as detailed above by custompunk.
You can buy replacement gear parts, cheap. Take off the cover plate on the motor. Remove all the broken plastic parts. Clean housing. Insert new parts. Grease. Reinstall cover plate. Reinstall motor. Done.
Weird, I bought a dorman 742-251 and darn thing doesn't seem to fit as the body of motor hits door before can align mounting holes. Has anyone experienced this??

If it's any help, I found the the motors from an 84 Town Car to bolt right in. The motor from the passenger side REAR fits the drivers door on the Cougar/Bird and the motor from the drivers side REAR fits the passenger side door. This helps if the motor itself is defective.
Good info. My motor was shot (no torque) as well, so I had to pull the whole thing out to replace it.
My replacement motor barely fit. The body of it was round and contacted the bottom of the door.
Had to do the window motor in my Lincoln when I purchased it. Just did BOTH in a friends 1989 LSC. All 3 were the ACI brand carried by Advance Auto. Perfect fit.
They have units listed for an '84 T-Bird as well.
Somewhere I remember reading there is a way to remove the motor without drilling the 3 holes.... maybe an extension and swivel or something like that?? I know when I did my DS motor many years ago I drilled the holes but later someone claimed it wasn't necessary. Sure wish I remember who and how....
