My mechanic and I are having a MAJOR dilemma in trying to get my A/C working again on my 1986 Mercury Cougar 2.3L turbo. The compressor went out and my mechanic and I have both TRIED to order a replacement from several different places and every one of them has come in looking like the one in this link:

Problem IS that the compressor that is actually on my Cat looks like this one:

Here's the dilemma: Is it possible that for some strange reason my 2.3L came off the assembly line with an a/c compressor that is listed as only having come on a 3.8L of earlier years??? We are LOST but would REALLY like to get my A/C working again seeing as how it's almost 100 degrees here :(
THANKS for ANY and ALL advice!!
Had to go to archive.org, but I believe all '83-'88 2.3 T-birds came with HR980 compressors.

Problem is I don't think it is even possible to get an HR980 anymore. You can't rebuild them - part of the reason for unavailability.
Pretty sure there used to be a conversion kit for it (new compressor, compressor mount, and hoses) that ran $500-700. Not sure how easy they are to get now.
Also, some later 2.3 Fords used different compressors. Don't know the feasibility for swapping one of them on.
Get it quickly...
