I was curious if anyone knows how much the 5.0 option cost in these cars back in the day. Anyone have their original window sticker?
The invoice for my '85 Cougar lists the "5.0L V8 EFI Engine" as a $498.00 option.
"Automatic Overdrive Trans" is listed as a separate $237.00 option. Was there any other choice?
No. If you got the V8, you also had to get the AOD. I have never seen anything contrary to that. So in essence, the V8 was really a ~$750 option (engine + AOD). ;)
Yeah, Ford still does that. When I was looking into buying my Mustang, I of course did several "build & price" sessions on Ford's website. Any time I clicked on an option a window would pop up saying "This option must be ordered in conjunction with option XXXX, and will add $XX to your final price. Do you wish to continue?"
$735 is not bad, considering the aod was made standard in 87, and the 5.0 was a $1200 option on 91-93's!! I heard that the 4.6 in the 94+ price was cut in half, roughly $650.
These are the only price books I have scanned so far...
1983
5.0L engine - $288.00
AOD trans - $176.00
1984
5.0L engine - $383.00
AOD trans - $237.00
1985
5.0L engine - $398.00
AOD trans - $237.00
There have been required transmission options from at least the introduction of big blocks(1958)... Back when it was the HD version of the three on tree or a beefier automatic, generally not called out(or maybe said to include) but defiantly added to overall price... When four speeds became avail in the early '60s, they were required at extra cost with Hi-Po 406 & 427, no three speeds or automatics avail... Then there was the reverse, if you wanted the std 6cyl engine forget getting a 4-speed, wasn't gonna happen(and in full size, not with a small block either)... Only exception I can think of were '65 & '66 Mustangs, they did have a light duty 4-speed avail, was imported from Great Britain...
Even in '77-'79 Coug/Bird the C4 was used with 302, while the optional 351W/M(seen both used with no distinction) got a cast iron FMX...
