Title: Fuel pump swap.....
Post by: vinnietbird on June 01, 2015, 07:45:20 AM
No big news, we all know what a fuel pump swap is. The cool part.....12 minutes from start to finish with a full tank. I am SO glad I have the access panel in the trunk!!!!

I am washing my clothes for the third time and they still smell like gas.

I hate you right now ;)

Head and Shoulders shampoo in the washing machine will get rid of the smell.  Did it for years when I worked on jets.....

does it work as a hand soap the same way?

Pretty much.  Takes a few times on your hands, but faster than regular soap by far....

That's awesome . Was that access hole there, or was it a Vinnie touch?

That would be a Vinnie touch

Haha that's awesome . I guess it's too good to be true if that were factory.

How often are you changing that pump? I only had to change my pump when I did the HO swap (knock on wood). My Mark VII is still running it's factory pump (knock on wood).

Lol, maybe vinnie swaps his pumps like he does upper intakes ;).

My factory pump lasted 316k miles and 29 years. My replacement lasted less then 24 hours and 75 miles. My timing wasn't off too bad, car had no power because it was fuel starved. Pump was putting out 15psi.

I have sheet metal screws and black caulking, now i need tin snips. I promise you that will be my next purchase.

I swapped my pump when mine died, and I had a full tank of gas. Hated dropping the tank. But, I dealt with it. The pump I bought was from Autozone. It died about a month later, so, the access panel was fabbed. The panel it self is made from sturdy sheet steel, and the gasket is simply cork/rubber sheet cut to fit the panel. I coated each side of the cork gasket with black rtv, and stuck it to the panel, and allowed the other side to simply air dry. Then when I install it, it seals to the trunk floor without sticking to it. 9 short self tapping metal screws hold it in place easily, and once the carpet is back down, nobody would ever know. Some hate the idea of cutting the hole, but, it's very functional. We make a  ton of mods to everything else, so why not? If you do it, you'll thank me one day if your quite a ways from home and your pump dies. I can swap the pump anywhere, in a few minutes, even wearing nice clothes if I was taking Gayle out on a date.

on the bottom of the car we are adding a long rubber flap to the body just forward of the tank.  that will keep any and all debris from getting on top of the tank.
we will use plastic buttons to hold it on the car.

Good thinking. I need to add one of those.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but where exactly did you cut the access hole in the trunk?

Floor of the trunk, its under the "home plate " shaped bubble. You can clearly see the shape in Vinnie's pic, and once you pull up the carpet it will be obvious.

The left side of the picture is the rear of the car. The bottom is the passenger side.
