The cap, or the fitting contact the intake, doesn't matter which cover is on which head..I tried 'em both ways.
I also have a 1" spacer between the upper and the lower....
I could cut out the forward hole on the nearest v/c in the pic, but how would I seal the hole where the breather cap is currently? In fact, both the fitting and the cap need to be at opposite ends of their respective covers.
In the meantime, I'm going to sandblast a set of HO rocker lids and use them. I'm pretty pissed...I want to run the Motorsport covers...
Previous owner admitted to never having these on an efi engine, and he'd never thought about them being on one...guess I could sell them and try to find a decent set that doesn't have any shiznit done to 'em. :hick:
Use this...

Then take a trip to Lowe's and get chrome flat caps to fit the other holes. They're in the aisle with bolts, in the slide-out drawers. That should do it. Won't be cheap but for converting these to fit an EFI motor, it's not horrible either.
Sweet! I made some changes again and now the Motorsport covers fit...but I'll definitely need to use your advice on the fill stuff..thanks E-man! Hope you guys are doing OK 8n these difficult times, also.
Well, it's no bueno, unless I want to run an inch spacer (i don't).
The throttle linkage hits the valve cover. Looks like these will be sold and I'll get something that's not as tall. it.
Yep, that's the problem I had also. The 1" spacer is even a little tight but it works. Fortunately I have the cowl hood...otherwise, it's going to be a very close call with a stock hood.
That's performance parts for you: every time you think you get ahead, another thing comes along and escalates an issue. Throw money at it, find another problem, repeat cycle. ;)
I hear ya.
I tried my HO valve covers...no dice, not with 1.7 rockin rollers...rock n roll, indeed.
In any case, I can proceed with the finishing things off up top, save for the upper, and get to it on the bottom, new oil pump, etc.
What rockers are you using? I have the 93 crane race gold 1.7 cobra rollers on my wife's 93lx. I had to remove the baffles on the stock HO covers and also clean up a few spots inside. After that they fit no problems
I'm not sure on the but the HO covers wouldn't come close to sitting flush on the head lol.
I've ordered a 1" spacer, we'll see how that does. It'll be close, but should fit. I put the cable on the TB with the intakes on the head...looks like that extry half inch will let it clear with a wee bit to spare.
I run these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fms-m-6000-c302/overview/
They clear FRPP 1.6 ratio roller rockers just fine. Any of the FRPP ribbed EFI valve covers should clear roller rockers just fine. I had to run a 1/2" spacer between the upper and lower intake (Explorer GT40) as the throttle linkage hits without it. I believe that a tubular GT40 or Cobra upper should clear the FRPP ribbed valve covers just fine.
I like those, though I'd rather have some that just had "Ford" on them or nothing at all.
I just don't want people thinking I'm trying to pass the car off as a Cobra, or even a clone. My name isn't William Miller. (cliff's: guy has a '92 LX 5.0 convertible, he slapped on '93 Cobra wheels and a mismatched pair of snakes on the fenders, tells people it's 1 of 10 '92 prototype Cobra convertibles. That he bought with money that he got when his wife died, no less.)
I've got a 1" spacer kit ordered, should be here this week. I'd almost like to have some valve covers like mine..the taller ones, but without the holes punched out, and just run my own setup for an oil fill. Oh well, I'll make it work.
I'm already starting to get bored with it. That will change the first nice day we have again, and I can get a couple hours to finish the engine, well, at least as far as the bottom end, anyway. Pan still needs put on, and the mounts, headers, and upper intake.
Gettin' there.
The inch TFS spacer arrived, mocked things up, and things are good to go. Lots o'room for the throttle cable and whatnot...hopefully it fits under a stock hood, now.
I've got some pics, but I can't post from my phone, so I'll upload them later, and link them into this post.
Ta da! http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fms-m-6000-j302r/overview/
I went with the Cobra covers as I have an ultra rare FMS "5.0 COBRA HO" intake plaque. It fit the theme. Plus it's not like I'm passing my car off as a factory build.....
I've actually been looking for something like these.....

Drill your own holes for your particular setup. Decent price too.
Yeah, I love those.
I'd sell mine in a heartbeat and go with the ones you linked. :)
Ummm…yeah…I just tried going that route last summer. Buyer beware: the bolt holes may not line up correctly. This caused about a month of grief trying to get a resolution from the seller. I have a new (theoretically "correct") set sitting on the workbench that may--or may not--go on this spring. Depends on how ic I feel at the time. I love the look but swapping them out with my engine setup is just horrid.
Anyway, I just wanted to warn people that might otherwise be suckered in by the price.
. I saw the price and thought...wow.
I'd compare them to a set of stock valve covers to be sure the new set has the bolt holes in the proper spots...but you may have, so...
On mine, I was able to put the covers on after the spacer simply by taking the TB off, and the bit screwed-in fitting on the back driver's side corner of the intake.
The breather cap on my v/c is baffled, and there's also a PCV valve. I'm not to worried about the PCV, as I'd retain use of the one at the back of the intake, but I don't really care for the piece of hose sticking out of the front of the valve cover.
With the v/c swapped to opposite sides, there's not enough room to get the breather cap, and use it as an oil filler...I've not experimented with it too much yet, I will later this afternoon though, and post my results.
All of this wouldn't normally be an issue, but these v/c's came with the '84 and I really like the look of them. I might end up selling them or trading for a set that will work with 1.7 roller rockers.
I have looked at these in the past but I just ended up ordering the TFS aluminum fill necks and welded them to the my existing Motorsport tall valve covers and also had an aluminum bung welded to the filler neck for the PCV system.

I cannot comment on the quality but others on the Mustang sites are running them.
Darren
Good to know. There are plenty of others out there with the same look. It would seem I'll need TWO sets, one tall for the Cougar and one standard for the Lincoln to compliment the new intake.
You can use the HO valve covers if you use 2 gaskets per cover. My mustang is like that with 1.7 rockers. No intake spacer needed.
Another option: http://www.andersonfordmotorsport.com/anderson-valve-covers-polished-aluminum-with-oil-fill-tube/
The factory T-Bird valve covers have more room on the inside than the HO valve covers since they are stamped steel vice the cast aluminum. The 93 Cobra used the t-bird valve covers to clear the 1.7:1 factory roller rockers. Usually 2 good valve cover gaskets (Rubber Impregnated Steel) will work on the stock t-bird covers to clear all valve train less stabilizer bars.
Those valve covers thunderjet302 posted are probably much better fit and finish than what I posted. I wonder if they will clear valve train girdles?
