Hey all, just putting out there before i do anything official or drastic that i am considering parting with the 1987 Cougar XR-7. I really want to replace my lost Bird, and i have the minty LSC too now, so 3 cars is too much given the lack of garage storage and insurance cost. I needed to ask in general what the consensus for a fair asking price for this car should be. Also to see if anyone from here might have interest in this car before i create a sales ad here and Craigslist.
Mods, please don't move to classifieds as its not certain i am selling yet. Thanks for that courtesy in advance.
Car is located in Long Island NY
72K miles when i purchased, at about 80K now. (original mile car)
Paint is 100% original and intact, clear coat as well. Needs a very good clay bar detail to get down past some of the surface oxidation, and should shine up very nicely. I may have this done prior to selling, and will affect the price if do.
Shifts tightly and perfectly.
Heat was awesome, AC worked fine last summer, i suspect it needs a recharge though. Compressor should be fine.
Stereo is all stock and sounds perfect with the cassette adapter for my iPod.
Power everything works perfectly.
Leather is perfect, near flawless, lumbars work perfectly.
Gauges are spot on, speedo was in perfect sync with the speed on my GPS.
Very quiet with regard to squeaks and rattles.
Doors opened and close perfectly
All weather strip is perfect, window sweeps, felts etc. no dry rot
Belt line moldings were flawless and the chrome strips were perfect, no oxidation anywhere.
Rims are super clean, no rash.
Alignment is good, with good Cooper tires all around
Cruise Control is perfect
Trunk is mint, has rubber mat also! :-)
Console plate is perfect and intact, no lifting and no screws through it to make it flat.
Perfect Headliner, carpet, floor mats, and vanity mirrors. Dash looks like showroom new, door pulls are tight and perfect, and rear package tray is perfect. Interior has almost no discernible fading.
Rearview Mirror needs to be re-silvered
One tiny nickel sized rust spot, (no rot) on the passenger rear quarter just above the moldings.
One touched up scratch on passenger door, with the wrong color silver touch up paint pen.

Hmmmmmmm.
Hmm.
Interesting option choices on it, dual power leather seats, but not even illuminated entry.
Uh oh, i smell a sinister plan.......
I'm waiting for Lou to come RUNNING in here tripping over himself with a very specific statement...:rollin:
I actually like the options it came with. All the true comfort stuff, without the fluff.
Sure....... now you're thinking about selling that beautiful kat!! Of course, depending on what you'd be asking for it, I would've much rather got that from you.
well, it looks i am off to eBay and Craigslist, as no one here seems too interested. Its a shame, would love to see this one stay in the forum family.
I'd love to but I've got too many cars and not enough room for another one. I would leave the exterior and interior of your XR7 totally stock. It looks perfect. I'd probably pull the AOD and rebuild it to the specs as the one in my Thunderbird, pop a set of Twisted Wedge heads, intake, a cam in it, and a set of 3.73 gears out back. It would look exactly as it does now with the hood shut but you probably wouldn't want me to do that to a low mile car like your XR7.
Dave, wait until it warms up a hair, seriously. Droptop weather begets higher car prices. Winter; trucks/SUVs.....
I told you the price you could get if you wanted it gone tomorrow. If you're willing to wait, you can get more....
You don't post a price and you expect people to jump all over it? Just remember this is the only place that car has ANY value. Outside of this board you will be lucky to get 1500 for it. I want another clean fox cougar but I am already working on a board member to sell me 1 or 2 of his....
"I needed to ask in general what the consensus for a fair asking price for this car should be."
He actually did say this in the first three sentences. But he put up a wall of text so it's easy to miss. I did... :shakeass:
That said, it's tough to do since we all know what budgets we're operating on and we know outside of our enthusiast circle, these are still junk to many people. But yet we value and cherish them highly.

With utmost respect did you read my first post at all? The entire purpose was to gauge interest if any insiders might be interested before a general sale, and to get a price consensus from members whose opinions i trust. I was not whining or complaining, just moving on due to lack of interest on the car for whatever reason. Furthermore i expected nobody to jump on anything, and may in fact keep the car if the numbers dont make sense for me.
Hard to say on price. Body looks nice with a nice interior.
All I can say is what I paid for mine. 1988 LS 5.0 cloth interior, floor shift, full digital dash, all original paint (no spot of rust anywhere) 112K miles,
Bought about 8 yrs ago for $1400.
Hope it helps, looks like a great car, but really dont bring much money.
David, I truly would have bought your Cougar in half a heart beat than to have bought the car I did.
Its all good John, appreciate the thought. Its not a desperation move, i just need to make room for replacing the bird and getting the flood car stripped down and out of the driveway before my wife has a meltdown.
Personally I think an asking price in the $4k range is appropriate. If you clean the paint well you might even get a bit more. How does the underside look? If it's rust free you may be able to ask around $4.5k.
At least sell it to someone who will appreciate it and keep it in the shape it's in. I think it would be a shame to have the car used as a daily driver by a teenager/jerk wad who will destroy it in a year or two.
Underside is clean as a whistle, so we will see what happens. I might have a local buyer actually.
Ok, i am moving this to the Official cars for sale section...... would love to see it stay in the family here with someone, but putting up on CL also.
sold
That's awesome! Should I be expecting a call soon?
